New HobbyBrush Test site http://test.hobbybrush.com - 20/05/10

Hi all,

I've been talking about it for ages, but have finally started the ball rolling with a new website for myself & my miniatures. Introducing, The Hobby Brush

Its only bare bones basics at the moment, but I hope to see it grow with new picturs and the return of a few (ok.. probably a hell of a lot..) of old pictures of the models I've painted over the years, not least the thousands of epic models and dozens of commission jobs I did for 6mm gamers all over the place

As I say, not much to look at yet, but I've posted some pics which never made it onto the old Mercenary brush site.

Thanks for the Kind words guys.

Unfortunately using the simple built-in publisher on my hosting package means I can only have 6 pages at the moment :(

I'm using it to figure out what I want for the "real" site when I've raised funds to bribe my mate into building my own backbone for it to set me free to post lots more piccys :) That might be a month or two though, so please let me know what you like / dislike in websites so I can try to make sure I get it right.

My personal list for it at the moment:
I like simple sites (.
the value is the pictures & the documents, not about a pretty site itself.
Easy navigation - 3 clicks maximum to any target, no matter how many thousands of photos I put up.
Robust enough filing levels to cope with thousands of pictures from hundreds of armies given time
After all that I consider the aethstetis of the site itself. I've previously had quite dark, black dominated sites, but I'm quite liking this "open plan" white sheme - what do you think?

Cheers,
Paul.

I really like the clean white or light grey background for a site such as this as it lets the pictures speak for themselves and doesn't interfere with the colors of the miniatures.

My only tiny beef with the site is that you can't shuffle between the images in a gallery using the arrow keys on your keyboard. It wouldn't be a problem if the images were of the same size so the small arrow buttons or the "next button would't shift position all the time. But again this is a minor detail that I have no idea how to fix as I know only minimal basic HTML coding myself  :p

Warmaster - glad you like it! I too am limited in my coding skills & am currently using only what the hosting site provides in its basic drag & drop site builder. That said, you can flick through the images with your mouse without moving it - your cursor only has to be on the right hand side of a picture to click to the next, or the left for the previous, so if you stick it just off center of the screen, picture size makes no difference

Legion - Thanks! If anyone knows the 6mm scene its you, so thats a great vote of confidence  :;):

I've started ripping code out of it though & will see what kind of frankenstein pages it'll let me form with what I can understand enough to steal

Think the galleries are going to have to be three tiered in the end I'm afraid - simply too many pictures & too many armies!

So it will go something like Sci-Fi  --> 6mm Epic --> Studio Swordwind Eldar

SCI-FI would be on the header menu, linking to page with small pics & a sentence description for each sub-category.

Clicking "6mm - Epic"  (Either the picture beside it or the Linked Gallery title) will take you to a similar page with Individual armies / projects listed with single line descriptions and sample pictures.

Individual galleries will run with the current setup if I can get the code to work with large thumbnails linking to bigger pop-up pics which you can scroll through.

So it'll be 3 clicks to see any particular picture, but four to get a big version of it up.... hmmm... can I get away with that?

Something like this

Its only as I post this that I realise I'm slightly emmulating the layout one of the great epic sites of days of old... Dropship.org. I hope Carl wont mind!

The addition of a sub-menu bar under the header image will at least make inter-gallery surfing less clicks.

hmmm.. three months seem to have disappeared.... whoops...

New HobbyBrush Test site http://test.hobbybrush.com

BUT, progress is being made! We've got the main backbone working in such a way that it should happilly support hundreds of galleries and thousands of pictures without getting too confusing. I'm still in the (Lengthy) process of padding it all out, but so far there's:

All my Seeds of War Articles
The Seeds of War Pax Arcadia "Studio Model" Gallery (170+ pics!)
A gallery of some Fantasy Art by a friend of mine.

and.. and... umm... damn.. i didn't realise how little there really was so far, but I'll keep you posted!

Please feel free to have a poke around & if you find anything that Doesn't work or that you think needs changing, please let me know. Thanks for looking!

*edit* Now Galleries added for:
FW Ursarkar Creed Bust
WHFB Chaos display pieces
Warmaster Joust Diorama
LoTR Legolas' (legoli?) x 3
WHFB Bretonnian Army

Epic Soon!

First epic galleries are up!

There's a lot more added too (see the news page) but the epic galleries are now open, and can be found here:
http://test.hobbybrush.com/scifi/6mmepic/

Nothing new to those who remember my old site I'm afraid, but it Currently contains:
Studio Models gallery (stuff I painted for the GW / fanatic studios, including unreleased models.
Studio Eldar Gallery - The miniatures I painted for the Swordwind supplement.
IG Snow Tundra gallery - Commission painted for a forum member many many moons agon :)

Those who know my old site will know there's lots more yet to be added, and a few new things too, but its a start :)
