If GW ever did drop official model support it would become very difficult to attract new players to the hobby.

Because that's so easy at the moment :p

I have begun to wonder how long GW (and others) will matter at all. With the advent of 3D modeling & printing it seems like the current GW business model has a definite expiration date - one that is probably not more than a few years down the road.

Yes, it will kill wargaming as we know it, lets hope something survives!

I'm actually a bit surprised that one of these Internet Figure Painting shops based in China or elsewhere in that region hasn't started offering manufacturing services for small run miniature projects. Maybe my impression of the tech required is ahead of where it's actually at?

Niel in Bangladesh looked into it. Too expensive for such a small client base to be a viable risk. Plus few small manufactures wish to send their moulds off to Asia with good reason.

There's this rather neat pamphlet of GW TO&E existing apparently:

Shame they don't practice what they preach, aye.

I know there is nothing illegal about that being on here but GW are going to be pissed.....

Apparently this isn't IP or any such, as it's a "mechanism" (my guess).

RUG: by "shows" are you talking about the roadshow idea that you talked to me a while about? If so did you get my PM at all?

BLACKLEGION SAID:
"I`m used to the specific Wh40k background/fluff and the aesthetic look of the established ( = official)unit types. So i want to collect, build and paint models which reflect that.
Non-GW models are a poor substitue for me (only EW has some decent Space Skeletons) unless they are scratchbuilds."

I find myself falling under the same category here.  Whilst, like many, I do not play or enjoy playing 40k in 28mm scale it's the 41st millenium that does it for me: in the future I can perhaps see myself collecting some other 6mm sci fi armies to play different rulesets with but I tend to be a bit of a purist when it comes to mixing and matching!

Like E&C I do however reckon the current life-line support from GW is better than nothing at all: free rulebooks and a (tentative) line of miniatures to show new gamers that things are easily available: a lot easier than saying to someone, "well...you can get that from ebay, that wierd model you've never heard of MIGHT be able to be found somewhere else, we use X companies mini's as Y..." and so on!

Yes but GW did strong arm Warseer into banning the chap who posted it there for life. There are plenty of other things GW might take an interest in....

That's ridiculous.  It's straight out of their annual report and available on their investor relations website.  It's pure public domain.

Yes, but GW doesn't want their "fanbois" reading it, so they threaten legal action... and people who don't know the truth simply comply.

Was the thread removed from Warseer?  If not, I'll gladly go over and point out that it's information that GW is required to disclose.  They have no standing to restrict its dissemination.

BTW, I was sloppy in my terminology above.  It might not be public domain in terms of copyright, so they might be able to bitch about a direct reproduction.  However, they cannot complain about reasonable excerpts and links to the annual report.
