Thanks guys. Continuing the work of re-doing some of the old pages I've updated the Workbench and Links section. I've added a bunch of new links -most of them to the sites of the people who frequent these forums. I hope it's ok with you guys -otherwise I'll of course remove them at once. The workbench hass gone through a major overhaul. There's a bunch of pics there so they might take a minute or two to load.

Cheers! :)

The software I used all crashed and died so I cant update it anymore and I cant face redoing it from scratch. ?I get the webspace for free so I leave it up for prosperity.

One day 'I shall return"...

If you want me to download the entire website off the net and give to in a zip file I have a program that can do that...

WMN,

The Chaos page is nice, well laid out. Will GW have issues with the artwork use? ???

I love the idea of a Workbench type area. I think I learn much more from seeing what/how something was done before it gets the great paint job.

Not that it is not great to see great painted minis though.  :D

I honestly don't know. The art is mostly taken from the old Realms of Chaos books which are some 15 years old by now. In principle they'd probably have to enforce their IP rights but with so old and unavailable material I doubt they'd bother. It's not like I've scanned the entire new 40 rulebook and put up on my site so they're not going to lose any money on it. Anyway the worst case scenario is simply that they'll ask me to take it down.

Glad you enjoy the workbench page. It's kind of fun to do since it's also the only part of the site which will recieve regular updates.

BTW does anyone think that I should e-mail GW, Forge World, Woodland Scenics, etc. and ask for permission to put up links? And what about private persons?

Cheers! :)

I think it is some of the better pages I have seen on many sites. It shares ideas and insperations. Good thing to have on the site.

I always sent an email to let people know I was linking to their sites. In some cases they would add my site to their link list. Sort of a cross promotion kind of thing. ?:)

I also posted comments about other sites when it was relevent in my pages and I would link them there as well.

For example I might have a place were I was talking about how hard it is to match armies units and say "But I think when done like WMN did on his site, it works."
Note the link? I got many comments about how they liked this as well. Again the whole cross promotion thing.

I've tinkered a bit with the front page of the Lounge to make it a bit easier to read and also added a legal disclamier (not sure how legally valid it is...) along with suggestions on how to view the site. I also added a new BFG link and added the beginning of the Terrain and painting/moddeling section. No pics yet but just so that there's not so many broken links when you browse the site.

Cheers!

Cheers!:)

WM I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but I get text and pictures overlapping when I look at your site? :(
Anyone else have this problem?

Apart from that it is an excellent site, the workbench page is a cool idea.

By the way, cheers for the link, I will add one on my page next time I update my site!!

GW will have SERIOUS issues with the artwork.

It is irrelevant that the artwork is 15 years old, copyright ceases seventy years after the death of the creator.

GW must be seen to protect its IP at all times.

Failure to do so would weaken any court case against some other person who had scanned and put the entire new WH40K rulebook on a website.

Worse case scenario is possibly legal action for damages...

...though as you say more likely asking for its removal

I would recommend reading this section of GW's website

http://uk.games-workshop.com/Legal/legal.htm

relevant quotes

Out-of-Print Material

Please do not scan, copy, or republish any out-of-print (OOP) materials. It may be that in the future we reuse or license out the use of this material.

BTW does anyone think that I should e-mail GW, Forge World, Woodland Scenics, etc. and ask for permission to put up links? And what about private persons?

You do not need to ask permission to link to someone's website, though deep-linking images and other resources is deemed to be illegal.

It is nice to ask, but to be honest I never have.

You can ask permission, but as you are using GW's IP I think you may well be silly, as they may come and look at the site.

Also remember when linking that if the website has the right stats capability it can actually check which sites are referring it therefore the webmaster can check back on links anyhow.

No that's not just ?you. It is because of the way that some sections are made. Viewing the site in ?Internet Explorer at 1024x768 minimizes the problem but it is definitely something I'll have to work on as I get better with Dreamweaver.

Jimbo: Thanks; This is sort of difficult ground. I suppose I'll see how things work out but like you said it's probably best not to actually go sticking it in GW's face. However there's plenty of fan sites out there which use the various logos from GW's games so for now I'll take my chances.
BTW How much do you have to alter a basic design for it to no longer be copyright infringement? Theoretically I could make a logo from scratch which looked exactly like something GW had produced. (Like an improved version of the Adeptus Mechanicus logo for the Games Day t-shirt for example).

Cheers! :)

Hi!

Jimbo is correct. Over the years some art and files available on the epicentre has been removed at their request. It may take, days, months or even years, but they will get around to it sooner or later.

100%

From the GW website

PLEASE NOTE that any work you create using our intellectual property is not "owned" by you. It is called a "derivative work" and those parts based upon our IP do not give rise to their own copyright. Please bear this in mind when using our IP.

however even if it is all your own work and looks like the original then you would still be infringing copyright

also don't forget that a lot of GW icons and logos are in fact trademarks and are covered by trademark law which is something else to IP and copyright.

Hehe; yeah these things really are quite a jungle.

The tricky part is that in some cases you'd really be discussing taste. If someone makes a piece of fan art or a logo which bears some kind of resemblance to an existing design it is difficult to judge werther or not it is actually copying the original or just a coincidental similarity. A line has to be drawn somewhere of course but when judging similaity it will allways be a subjective matter. All too many companies are using this to their advantage. Make our products/logos/marketing look just close enough to the original without it being an actual ripoff and many consumers buys the product out of ignorance.

Cheers! :)

Hi,

From what I've read, it seems that as they realise that fans want to make websites regarding their stuff, the most important aspect is making sure you aren't claiming any GW-owned stuff from them is yours. As long as you respect their IP and credit them, I think there shouldn't be a problem. As others have said, if there was/is a problem, they would most likely ask you to remove the material before doing anything more serious. It might be an idea to create basic (buttons and text only) menu page to keep on your harddrive as a quick replacement that can be uploaded quickly should that ever happen. "Better safe than sorry" as some people might say. :)

But as others have said, there are some sites out there which basically scan the rulebook, etc which should peeve GW off before proper fan sites.

Cheers,
Freshmetal
