Hi!
However E40K never unseated SM2. My other friend is a rabid SM2 fan, he ranted about it again today, and berated E40K repeatedly !
|
Quite ironic that after over 7 years since its release EPic 40k still elicits such strong responses against it. Talk about beating the dead horse...
Epic A, is the clear front running in "official" GW rules, how much of that is pre-release hype that will stand the test of time remains to be seen.

Despite the prescence of NetEPIC on the poll, note how SM2/TL still is almost as popular as Epic40k on its own...
And there was no SM2/TL list to notify, the Epic40k list was notified...

Hi!
The best thing I like about E-A is activation, and we have used that rule since Day 1 starting with SM1 in '90. It can be used with any Epic rule system with little or no modification. And really takes the game from checkers to chess, IMO.
|
True, activation is by far the most "robust" of game mechanics. Netepic introduced "alternation" in the movement phase to get it closer to the activation ideal, but due to the turn sequence with phases a full activation mechanics cannot be implemented.
Thats why Heresy has a activation mechanic, I think, as of you yet its the best mechanic for an epic type game.

Well let there be no doubt, E-A being the "new, bright, shiny thing on the block", will have something to do with it's high ratings. ?That being said, it is good rule system, generally speaking. I use to game with a group of guys that one or two of them would always rave about any new game and lauded it as the best thing since the discovery of the known universe (!). ?However we bought their "new" stuff a few months later at dirt cheap prices, and sold the extras for a good profit. ?E40K was such a different system, that it must have been as much a shock to SM2 players as SM2 was to SM1 players. ?And as we have said before, only time will tell the rest of the story ...

Hi!
I never perceived the transition from SM1 to SM2 as that traumatic, but come to think of it, it was a BIG change mechanics-wise. I think the furor was too big because the system was in its infancy and the epic community wasn't too big back then (although larger than it is now).
SM2 was the "big leagues" for epic, lots of support, models and players. It was the longest running one too, from 1992-1997, five years is a long time for an epic game without a revision of change.
The change brought by epic 40k, to put it mildly was a shock, a big one, no doubt. I think GW should have done the changes gradually, slowly mutating the system towards a goal of something more "streamlined". The way they did it was of course, disastrous.
To bad we can only speculate what the reception would have been if Epic A, not epic 40k would have been released 7 years ago.

Well SM1 was "small potatos" and only 1/2 baked. But I was shocked and never really took to SM2 but used some of their rules/ideas/concepts for our own purposes ... The same could be said about E40K. For that matter, I hated the fire power system, but now I strongly favor it ... we evolve or like my SM2 buddy, we stay where we're comfortable. Do what works for you ...

Hi!
SM1 is a fun game, but the interphase of non-titan and titan units was somewhat clunky, a similar problem was seen when AT II was made and tacked on to epic 40k, they didn't mesh well. That said I think SM1 has by far the best representation of titans to date, all other system, IMO, are pale comparisons.
I think your approach is best, take what you like from each system and meld it into something you like. I doubt any system ever made will ever satisfy someone totally.
On a side note, what does your SM2 friend think about netepic?

Well, that's the way we see it, just like a buffet ( ), take what we like and "morph" them together to our liking and go from there. Since our numbers are few, it's easy to do that. I know some of the other guys have said before, that it is easier to "play out of the box", because you can get a "pick up" game going anywhere. Well that may work for them, but I don't see that happening in our case. And my SM2 buddy likes the NetEpic system, and takes rules from both SM2 and NetEpic, when they play. Netepic is strongly based on SM2, as you know, where we use SM1 as our starting point. But everyone should "do their own thing" !

We still need to get a printable set. ?We discussed this briefly the other day, but time still is not on our side. ?When we were playing regularly we knew what rules came from what system and if there was a question, I'd just grab a copy of those rules and read it. ?If we had set of rules that was worthy of sending out to you all, I'd do ... But like I said we still are working on somethings from E-A to add. ?Plus the fact that we don't have time to play just makes things that much worse ...

Hi!
I think painting orks was what broke my "painting spirit". It took me a long time to paint since they have actual "flesh" to paint as well as armor. Unlike marines and IG which have mostly uniforms.
