I went to this - http://www.guardian.co.uk/advertisingsummit - yesterday and spotted 1 or 2 errors on average per presentation. And these are very very well paid people...

I thought this might amuse, taken from an article in Readers Digest Junior treasury 1960 by Doulton Edwards, adapted from astounding stories

KAOS IN CE KLASRUM

You must often have thought English spelling is unnecessarily difficult. Just look at words like Cough, Plough, Rough, Through and Thorough. The great writer, Bernard Shaw, warned us to change our alphabet, and someone worked out a way of doing it.
In the first year, for example, we would suggest using “s” instead of the soft “c”. Sertainly all students in all sities of the land would resieve this news with joy. Then the hard “c” would be replased by “k”, sinse both letters are pronounsed alike. Not only would this klear up the confusion in the mind of spellers, but typewriters kould all be built with one less letter.
There would be great exsitment when it was at last announsed the the troublesome “ph” would henseforth be written “f”. This would make words like Fotograf twenty per sent shorter in print.
In the third year publik interest in a new alphabet kan be expekted to have reatshed a point where more komplikated tshanges are nesessary. We would suggest removing double letters witsh have always ben a nuisanse and a deterent to akurate speling.
We would al agre that the horible mes of silent “e’s” in our language is disgrasful. Therefor, we kould drop thes and kontinu to read and writ merily along as though we wer in an atomic ag of edukation. Sins by this tim it would be four years sins anywun had used the letter “c”, we would then sugest substituting “c” for “th”.
Kontinuing cis proses year after year, we wud eventuali have a reali sensibl written language. Atfer twenty yers wi venture tu sa cer wud bi no mor uv ces teribl trublsum difikultis. Evn Mr. Yaw wi biliv wud bi hapi in ce noleg cat his drim finali kam tru.

But when "literally" is used the way it is I can't contain myself. Figuratively speaking. It's creeping into all popular media, including the BBC. Sadly. I fear it is a symptom of a wider decline in expressivity. If someone I know says to me "I literally thought I would explode" I can't let it go, I have to interpret it in the literal sense.

I have to agree here. I can let most issues go - I kind of have to a lot of the time - but the over-extended use of the word 'literally' makes me want to literally kill someone! The number of times I hear 'I literally laughed my arse off' is worrying.

I work in a big US corporation where everything is awesome. No, it's not. Holding the lift for you is not awesome. Nor is delaying our meeting by 2 minutes while you finish your call.

this a grammar thread; do you really expect us to forgive any mistakes? You could be missing every digit but the pinky on your non-writing hand and we'd still burn you at the stake.

What kind of stats do you think the Gayroller 2000 would have in EA?

Autokill vs. Marines and possibly Guard (straight ones, anyway), not sure about Eldar as they seem a bit "ambiguous" and no effect on Tau as they have no sex at all as far as I can tell (so would struggle to choose one over the other). Orks would just reinflate themselves after being run over like the little spore sacks they are.

Technically that should be spore sacs. You would think a scientist would know that?

Sheesh, that is my BIGGEST pet peeve; it drives me nuts when people confuse sac with sack.

Heh... nuts.

And Carlos, I think I'll be converting up a Deathwheel proxy for CaptPiett's EC now.

hey, I work on worms so no sacs or sacks to speak of. No eyes, legs or wings either which simplifies things no end. However, as to sacs vs. sack (btw, is it nut sac or nut sack?), Forgeworld clearly disagrees with you and this is a gaming forum after all :)

I just can't wait, this would be the perfect partner for his kiddy fiddler vans. Just don't forget the screaming heteros being squashed under it's roller

(see what I did there? he he he)
