Huh, I'll have to ask the missus if she's feeling chuffed, and see what she says. ;-p

Its still used in Yorkshire - at least by my in laws anyway ;D

My Yorkshire lass reports that she'd never heard anyone use "Chuffed" as a negative.

Well, the language she used was a little more fruity than that. ;D

Are any UK people watching the program on language on the BBC with Stephen Fry? They have had a couple of linguists on, and one conducted an experiment with his new-born baby boy, where he brought him up with Klingon as his first language. They had to improvise on a few words - apparently 'nappy' and 'sippy cup' are not used particularly often in Klingon in the Wrath of Khan - but it became a 'living language' as it was used evolved in a 'natural environment'. As soon as the child had to interact with others, Klingon was dropped as it no longer became a useful method of getting things and communicating. As experiments go, that's genius. As parenting goes, it dubious. :)

Heh. We taught our son a simplified sign language first. He used it, then dropped it when he realized we weren't SL-fluent.

Much to the disappointment of my wife when we got married, she found my Klingon-English dictionary amidst my belongings. She looked at me and said, "Really? A Klingon dictionary? Why can't you be normal and have porn like other guys?"

you're using an American dictionary to educate British people about their own language. Using the, ahem, original dictionary gets you this:

It's like when anyone uses an American dictionary to prove that I've spelled something wrong.

http://oxforddictionaries.com/page/britishoramerican is rather fun too, although sometimes you have to wonder at the bloody mindedness of the early Americans. Did you really need to rename the crocodile clip the alligator clip, just to be different? (rhetorical Q obviously, as they're all dead now)

Well as my english is heavily influenced through the internet, particularly this forum i tend to use a horribel mix of british and american english with some misspellings i guess.
Don`t ask me about pronounciation! For example: for years i pronounced Flesh Tearers as Flash Teerers.

This could be my biggest pet peeve these days, using an apostrophe to form the plural.

You think that's bad - I'm in the pub with two friends and a reasonably attractive girl.
They're having a heated argument in Klingon.

She leans over to me and goes, " Goodness, is that Welsh?"

I had the choice of dooming the two of them, or leaving the poor girl confused for the enxt 12 months. I doomed them.

This is "literally" the best thread ever...

A lot of the mistakes brought up so far annoy me, I don't know why I'm so bothered by them as I do recognise that most do not hinder effective communication. If someone wants to disadvantage themselves in the workplace by having poor grammar that's up to them, and on the internet I don't care at all, especially since English is not always someone's first language. But when "literally" is used the way it is I can't contain myself. Figuratively speaking. It's creeping into all popular media, including the BBC. Sadly. I fear it is a symptom of a wider decline in expressivity. If someone I know says to me "I literally thought I would explode" I can't let it go, I have to interpret it in the literal sense.

I console myself by binning job applications if they have more than one grammar mistake (though I also grant one or two typographical errors, because I'm a big softie really).

The language as clothes analogy I find interesting. Something I have noticed at work is younger people seem to take their poor spelling and grammar and add to it an overly formal and even unfriendly style in a bid to make them sound "professional". It makes them look like idiots.

Apologies for the inevitable mistakes. I'm typing on my phone.
