Andy's response posted on the SG boards makes a lot more sense.
L&D: Won't have re-release of full mini range as of right now, so it will remain unofficial.
Nids: He won't post recent updates because Call to Arms says 3.0 and he doesn't want a different version in the vault. (Not that it explains why any of the other more recent versions weren't posted, but whatever.)
Chaos Marine: Currently planned for August, but he is unwilling to promise anything. My translation: he had a brainfart when he posted that no schedule was released for it. We've always known that the release schedule was subject to (sometimes radical) change.

Yep, GW is pulling out in their normal, slide to the bottom style.

While this is not exactly encouraging news with respect to the LaTD list and the Chaos release I do appreciate that we get a more or less clear answer for once.

Most of the minis are convertable from IG stock. In fact, all that is really required from the sprues are the Daemons.
Does anyone know exactly what will be released for L&D?

CS: All the daemon engines are OOP and there is no new mini planned for the Chaos Altar.
Other than that, yes, you could pretty much use IG for all of it with modest conversions.
As far as the last word, Andy's email implies that the only minis that would be released would be those that are part of the chaos infantry sprue, but that is far from official word.

Quote (Mojarn Piett @ 08 May 2006 (07:54)) | Me, I think the most dire portent so far is the return of JJ's regular column in the GW product brochure (i.e. WD). | Yes, that is a bad sign.
I, too, believe that Feral Orks are the last release, but I hope I'm wrong.

The thing which worries me the most, is the implication that only 'official' lists will have miniatures produced for them, and that if miniatures cant be released then the list is in some way less official.
If a list is well developed, then it should be accepted as official by SG. I would like to think that there will still be many new releases for the game, but even if there are I would hate a lists development to be constrained by this. This is particularly worrying in the current case of L&D, where almost all of the units are within the conversion skills of most players. If a list is held back due to the fact that a player would need to convert some IG vehicles, what happens with the Tau or Tyranids or Necrons?
Why does the fact that SG cant/wont/doesnt want to release specific minis for every unit mean that the list is 'less official' (implying 'less balanced')?

Quote (CyberShadow @ 08 May 2006 (12:14)) | The thing which worries me the most, is the implication that only 'official' lists will have miniatures produced for them, and that if miniatures cant be released then the list is in some way less official. | This is taken straight out of Wizard's of the Coast playbook C/S.
WotC came up with the Type II magic tournament structure where only the last year's sets and current main set are allowed in tournament play strictly because they make *zero* money from the highly active secondary market.
it's purely a business ploy to keep generating a continuous revenue stream by forcing people to buy the most current set of miniatures.
And if you already happen to have an investment of any size in "outdated miniatures" *cough* Squats *cough* well... tough luck boyo.
To borrow a direct quote from WotC's old VP of Sales...
"We don't give a sh**."
When taken in context of SG's diminished release schedule the fact that they'd rather force you to play existing lines and therefore have to buy those miniatures for tournament play it's not really all that surprising.

Normal path for business:
Start out an dneed fan base to be success. Grow larger with major number of fans. Start to think you are above the need to service the fan. Loose Fans. Blaim everything but yourself for problems. Close up shop.

Q: How do you make a small fortune in the game industry?
A: Start with a large one.

dafrca | In that case, looks to me like GW is in stage 5.
