They are paid considerable more than a $1 a day. Niel set up in an Export Processing Zone which has minimum wage, pay progression every 6 months etc. As he's an honest sort of chap he is actually holding to those regs and the amount of training he gives means he wouldn't follow the factory practice of making sure everyone is fired before the 6 months is up even if he was that sort of chap. I believe the starting pay is 5 times that of a traffic policeman (we were amused to discover, though of course the girls working for him can't ask for bribes). Though he does moan about the amount of tea and biscuits they consume and lunch they munch
As a side note he keeps a very funny record about his battles with corrupt officials as one goal is never give a single bribe, much to officialdoms annoyance!
