For some reason, this kickstarter project has got me really excited.

It's very ambitious, but could be something really special I think, for any fans of "realistic" 28mm sci-fi.

I urge anyone to take a look - once it hooks you in, it's addictive :D

I saw this, but I am cautious to be honest. There doesnt seem a lot of detail to hook me in, and the idea of an evolving game is great but requires an investment that I just dont have for a 28mm game. That said, the names behind the rules and sculpting are first rate. I already have a couple of 28mm games that I have focussed in on (Defiance Vital Ground, Advanced Space Crusade, etc), so this is one that I will keep an eye on.

Also, as someone who has become kind of addicted to Kickstarter (at least, the idea of it - I have backed a couple of projects which is a great idea until you realise that the people behind them really are not business men, and as soon as the project deadline arrives suddenly delays in shipping, etc pop up!), I wonder if we should have a Kickstarter thread here.

My latest project to back (wargame-wise) is 'Dice Cards'. Effectively, a deck of cards with a number of dice on them as pictures. So, for example, a D6 appears on 48 of the 52 cards, with 8x 1's pictured, 8x 2's pictured, etc. So, the entire deck can substitute a variety of dice by cutting the deck, and there are other random selectors pictured such as 'short straws', heads/tails, etc.

Yeah, this is an unusual kickstarter in that they had very little to show us when it started. But it is a long kickstarter, running until the end of February, and more detail is emerging every day, so it's hotting up.

There are some really intriguing elements (to me at least), but they can be a bit hidden away in the forum, videos and kickstarter updates.

In summary, the things that hooked me are:

1) Rick Priestley - can't wait to see what he can do, released from the GW shackles and with the benefit of 30 years experience.

2) Modern rules - very clean and potentially tactical. Alternating activations, reactions, support actions, combat status morale system. Sounds like you can play a good game with 30-40 figures, so not too large an investment. The D10 system is designed to allow up or down-scaling for RPG/skirmish/mass battle gaming using the same basic system.

3) Background - Rick seems to have a knack for it! Lots to be fleshed out yet, but I love the plausible and hi-tech feel. A departure from 40k. Highly evolved Nu-humans that do exactly as they please; nano-technology that's in the water, taking over the universe like a virus, because it can't help it; thousands of breeds of pan-humans that have evolved or been modified until they are effectively aliens; armies of sentient drones fighting for and against you, each designed for a particular task; a healthy helping of mercenaries, gun runners and pirates to help it all hang together.

4) Models - there's only one so far! But he looks cool. And Kev White is really great. Generally, they will be going for a "plausible" look - realistic proportions, sensible-sized weapons, no massive armour. Sounds great to me. The background is clever in that many models will be able to fight for almost any faction, so you will be able to have a lot of model variety in your force, even with just the starting range.

5) Dynamic gaming environment. You can (if you wish) fight as part of online "episodes" that will actually progress the gaming universe. These will vary from weekend-long raids to massive campaigns. You can get all kinds of cool rewards from this, from new bits of technology for your force to having your own commander written into the background as a hero!

I'm off now, I need a cold shower ;D

I totally agree with you, and if I were a 28mm gamer I would be all over this. I still might get a hard copy of the rules, to be honest, as there does seem a lot to like. However, the fact that it is not my scale of choice (when I even do get to game these days) along with the fact that I already have a 28mm game or two that I am happy with, means that realistically this is going to be a relatively high entry point for a relatively unwritten (at this time) set of rules for a game that I am unlikely to play. I do think that this will create ripples in 28mm gaming though, as there really does need to be a few more alternatives to 40K, and for that reason alone I wish them the best.
