The thing is... as a anime fan I know that if something gets hit by a Cease and Desist for copyright/license infringement, you will probably be able to get it off torrents

That's fine, though, because it's not the real threat.

Pirated IP does not become part of the public domain.  The company may not see any profit from it or even a loss from competition, but they retain all their rights.  Those rights allow them to do other things to make profit, not least of which is fencing out legitimate competition.

OTOH, if they do not assert their rights, the material does enter the public domain.  At that point it's a free-for-all.  The competition is not just little fan projects and small pirate operations but legitimate companies.

_Damnatus_ is not something that will threaten GW.  Universal Studios doing the same thing because _Damnatus_ broke the IP is a major threat.

That's the point. I think we will still all get to see it.

At the end of the Day whether the movie gets leaked or not I think Games Workshop has once again managed to cast themselves in a poor light in regards to their fan base. Does GW not have any type of Public Relations dept. to package these types of decisions in more pallatable packaging?

would it be worth it, the way that news is propagated these days. People are far more likely to hear it  forth hand off some mate on the interweb. By then it is always going to sound like GW is stepping on peoples fun, no matter what the original message was.

A good Public Relations department is proactive, not just reactive. They could have beaten the news onto the web and gave it a more positive spin, perhaps a press release allowing as how no one had forseen the Germain/UK law complexity and releaseing a joint statement with the film creators about how it might get worked out to everyones satisfaction. I admit I usually judge Games Workshop harshly, but I also realise I am not the average Games Workshop fan either. Many companies have PR departments because negativity and a bad reputaion can and do spread if left unchecked, its just good buisiness sense.

I hate to be a stick-in-the-mud, especially when it comes to GW, but GW has every right to protect its IP. Nor do I believe the slippery slope argument that today it's movies, tomorrow it's something else GW will forbid.

Every "right," yes. ?But just because they can do it doesn't mean they should. ?

The problem is that once they start protecting their IP, their fans cease to generate IP as well. ? The cost may well outweigh the benefit for the hobby and their market.

However, the other benefit (for them) is pandering to shareholders, who likely know the market less well, and will tend to think in the standard corporate box.  They get a little boost to their stock by announcing that they're consolidating their intellectual 'assets' and pursuing infringements on their property.  In the current environment, it's a way of generating positive buzz, and a brief window to sell a dying stock.
