If you don't take criticism well, don't read. I don't want to start a flame war.

Continuing slightly from the topic of posting images and stuff...

all this is nice to have links to everyone's web sites and everything, but the problem is the web sites themselves.

Having a web folder of images is easy to get at, but not if you have to trawl through to find the latest images.

Same with some web sites. The images may be organised in lovely categories, but trying to find the ones you havent seen before is also a nightmare.

Dating each image is not that great either as you'll have to remember when you last checked, especially when the date of the images are also scattered around with the image.

Galleries like DeAynes, (because others I've seen are slow to access) is good coz you have some form of ordering of images posted. i.e. lastest ones at the end/beginning (depending of the type of gallery)... BUT there are so many categories that by the time I've clicked through all the categories, my finger's about to drop off. A balance is needed in these Galleries.

Doing an update page (as I do myself) also help (but I'm not saying is the best solution) means more work, but is an easy solution.

I suppose I'm just having a friday moan, but its advice I'm sure people can take it or ignore. When you create a web site with so many images that you hope users will come back regulary to check for updates, consider what they have to go through to do this.

Thank you for reading... now tie the blind around my eyes and lead me to the gallows

Well I can quiet honestly say Ive never found any of the above a problem.
Firstly, I like many others use a free web servive for display my pics ie "Yahoo".
You cant directly link to a pic as it will not display and so a little brousing through folders is nessesry. Personly Im not bothered by this... I usualy end up looking at a whole bunch of pics and not just the one I was supost to.
Nor have I had any problems with the DeAynes Gallery, its all pretty well laid out.
On the whole I find Epic40k and Epicomms site to be amazing, its certainly the best epic site I know of.

The amount of work these guys have put into these sites is also amazing, and I thanx each and every one of them for doing so.
Could these site be improved?... Maybe... but that can be said for every website no matter how good.
Ive never found any problems with this site that deserve comment. Im sure its creators are more aware of what furture improvments are needed than I am.
Im just thankful they took the time to make this site so we can all come together and enjoy it.

All of you above comments have been discust before in this forum. People are well aware of this very minor problems, if they were easierly fixable then they would be fixed, but like most things in life, it takes time and effort.

As for you final comment...
"now tie the blind around my eyes and lead me to the gallows"

Im sure no one will judge you, we're all an easy going lot. That said, in my oppinon, to start complaining after only two posts seems a little much.

I would agree with you, but it isn't the easiest thing to do and I know I have issues with a website which had thousands of images...

In theory you could have a picture forum (like this one, but with images) which would then remember which images you had not seen.

http://www.blackorc.com/forum/BlackOrc/gallery_list.cfm
http://www.coolminiornot.com/

I know with my site that adding images in this way is not as useful as of the different categories (and some are battle reports and not just miniatures of images).

I do try to let people know what new images I have added, but as with my most recent update I added about a thirty new images, most of which were work in progress on Jimbo's Workbench, a Warhammer 40K 400pt Battle Report and pictures of my Epic Ork Landing Craft.

Details of the update were outlined on the editorial page with relevant links.

However sometimes images are used more than once, for example this image

was used in a battle report, but will also be used on my 25mm Orks page and Jimbo's Workbench!

You make some good comments, and looking at stuff from a users point of view us always useful.

This is a problem, not least because pictures are one of the main reasons that people visit in the first place. I try to announce any updates to galleries in the front page message box, and I date pretty much every picture, article or whatever that I upload. But still, it is not perfect.

I dont take this as a criticism at all, and (I am sure that the guys will back me up here) any web master who is not prepared to listen to the opinions of visitors wont be a web master for very long.

So please, if you can suggest any improvement about these boards, or my site, go ahead and let me know.

All too true!

I have ben through many variations on my various site trying to find a way to get around this problem that covers all ptions. End Result: I havent found on yet that works for everyone & have come to the conclusion that I never will!

I use the simple news page option, updating it with every update to the main site & adding links to the new sections. The only exception to this is my workbench page, which I treat almost as a seperate entity - it exists for all the times I dont have enough hours in the week to do a proper update!

If anyone has any suggestions on how I can improve the update & notification system on The Mercenary Brush - please do let me know. That site more than any other I've worked onis basically there for the gallery & to hopefully provide some ideas an inspirations from my work for others.  Any suggestions may not be implemented for a while as time is very tight these days, but I would certainly appreciate the input.

What I would find useful is a new forum under Painting and Converting called Pictures. Then everyone wanting to show pictures can start one thread and post where those pictures are (i.e. their gallery, pics in the thread, yahoo, etc...). Then when they add new pictures they just add a reply to their own thread, or edit their first post. That way you have access to lot of people's pics easily and can see at a glance when they have been updated.

I don't know how useful this would be to others, but personally I have these boards bookmarked rather then their parent site, so something here would be best for me. Making it a message board purely for posting images might encourage more people to post them too, and the more pics the better as far as I'm concerned!

My editorial page has my updates and my blog also contains details of what I am painting and what I am looking at, as well as gaming news and views.

I like this idea. Anyone else got opinons?

Would the forum be done like the Painting Comp one, where anyone can upload pictures to the board, or would everyone be required to link to ones on their own webspace?

Cheers

Chris

There are currently two options:

The first is what happens at all places on these boards, and is the ability to link pictures into posts from a different part of the web, either as a link or directly into the post. The picture is not then stored on the same server as these boards, but behaves as if it were from the point of view of the person reading.

The second is to allow members to upload pictures directly to these boards and view them. It would work in exactly the same way with a single change, that as the pictures would be stored on the same server, it would reduce the need for seperate Yahoo briefcase accounts and the like as people would not neet their own storage space.

In the past, I have not allowed uploading pictures for the simple reason that I pay for bandwidth!  }:)

However, this was allowed for the EpiComp board as I felt that it was necessary to make the competition easier to use. I am prepared to allow uploading of pictures on all forums in the Painting and Converting section if people would find it useful. Any pictures that are required in a seperate place can be posted in this section, and then referred to if necessary.

The only proviso is that if I end up living on a station platform somewhere due to the fact that I cant afford my rent, I expect everyone to visit with a free Epic mini!  :;):

Seriously, I think that allowing images on any board in the Painting and Converting section seems like the best idea. In this case, all boards in this section would act like the EpiComms board for the purpose of pictures, and the rest of these boards would remain as they are. (If this does get expensive, I may just find a subtle ad - not pop-up! - to bring in revenue, but I am unwilling to do this unless really necessary.)

Comments?

Cool... I think letting us upload pics in the P&C forums would be great- my Briefcase is useful for storing larger pics and files, but photos can get lost amidst reams of files- I do take the time to look through the Yahoo folders people post with new pictures in to find the relevant photos but it is an extra bit of hassle the casual browser might not bother with, so this sounds a fantastic move imo..  :D
..And we might attract some more people from the official forums too..  :-:

That just about does it for me!  :D

I have enabled the use of attachments in the Painting and Converting section of these boards. We will see how useful it is.

Thanks guys!

Perhaps it would be a good idea to pin a quick guide at the top on how to post the images for the Newbies. Also perhaps something about reducing file size without making pics so small they are impossible to see :;): I remember this was a huge problem for me when I posted in the Painting competition.

Cheers! :)
