Why limit them? Was there a problem before? I'm trying to do a battlereport with linked pictures from photobucket. It's really annoying to have to go through each picture and resize them.

better technical fix would simply set the width to 640 on any image tag for sources wider than that. Or is there a way that we can set width in the BB code?

Agreed.
I have to do my photos for normal sites and the re-size them for here.

Makes me sad.

In addition at some point the retrieval of the images times out (common on some "pic heavy posts") preventing updates. Being able to set the width/height attributes on the image would be NICE :D
