I know that smilies can be disabled in posts, but is there any way to turn them off as an option altogether on the left hand side of a message when you're formulating a post?

Smilies don't normally bother me, but the new one with the flashing red writing at the bottom is both distracting, and irritating, and I would very much like to disable it if at all possible.

Block it in add block plus.
New custom filter on whatever smilie type it is you want to kill, eg: ||tacticalwargames.net/taccmd/images/smilies/nooo.gif will block this little charmer: :nooo

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping that there might be some forum setting that could do this though, in order to save my having to install additional software on my computer.

It turns out that I should have, in Firefox anyway, so I've sorted it. Now I just have to work out how to get it to block that smiley, as putting that link in as a custom filter isn't working.

left click on the image, there should be an option called "adblock plus block image" at the bottom of the context menu. that'll open up a bunch of custom filter options, select the one that most suits (in this case it'd be tacticalwargames.net/taccmd/images/smilies/* which will sepect all images in the smilies folder, so all in one go)
atleast, it worked for me (might need to refresh to get them all though)
it's what i use to get rid of forum avatars and image-sigs i dont like XD

sure, same process, select any one of the images, and select the filter blahblahblah/smilies/* and anything you put in that folder will no longer load at all.

i also use it to get rid of unsightly site banners, link-buttons or backgrounds. i love adblockplus.
