I haven't been on here terribly long but I'm loving it. However, it took a while to figure my way around. Why do we pretend there are three forums in here (BattleComms, EpiComms, GothiComms)? They each have their own news section and that seems odd. I'd say those news sections don't need subforums either... for example, the Epic Web News subforum seems like it could be absorbed in the general Epic Armageddon. It has 11 threads that received posts in 2010, and zero this year! And imo, Wargames General Discussion looks out of place next to the trading subforums. I also feel a little confused between the overlap in the Epic Armageddon, E:A Tactics & Strategy, and E:A army-specific subforums. I do see the need for all of them, but should I leave the army-specific forums alone for list developers and ask my tactics questions in the tactics forum? There are great discussions about ork kommandos and necrons in the general forum, just to add to my confusion. But of much greater relevance to my day-to-day use is the sticky thread issue. There are a lot of them, and some of them are out of date (broken photo links, links to defunct manufacturers...). The Epic Armageddon thread has a lot of army-specific figure-related sticky threads that could be moved into the army-specific subforums... or just allowed to die. I think we could standardize the stickies. Each army subforum could have one introductory thread ('here's what this army is like and why you should try it out'), a thread about army lists (and why there are different groups of them), and one about miniatures and proxies. The general game threads could have stickies for game resources (e.g. Armyforge, where to get blast markers, download rules...) Given my very limited experience in Epic, I could only help out with minis threads, which I'd be happy to do. One last thing - activating an account. It doesn't seem to work for Yahoo email addresses, so I'd like to know if that's either been fixed or if a note has been added. Otherwise we're probably losing potential new members. Thanks! |

Sorry for the delay in getting on this, as I have been away for a bit. Also, many thanks for taking the time to post your thoughts and comments. I am always looking for ways to improve things here, and I am very aware that I think 'sideways' and what seems OK to me can sometimes be confusing for others. Many of your points are well made, and are basically a product of evolution of the boards. For example, the sticky threads are fairly common and have broken links as I am due to archive them, and they were made before the most recent forum software upgrade. New software lead to a change in the web address... which broke all of the links. The layout of the board is also for a similar reason. The boards started as being dedicated to Epic and BFG. Later, a more general wargames section was added, and this has grown while the BFG has not taken off as much as I would have hoped (and I am in discussion about changing the structure of this section). Your suggestion on the stickies is probably the easiest to implement. As much as I would like to deal with this and archive them, broken links and the number of them probably makes this unmanageable and many should now be un-stickied. The issue on cross-over of a few topics is something that I feel we will most likely have to live with, although I do agree that it could probably be better defined. This is because the 'official' development (and I use the term in the loosest way!) should be seperate from more general threads. For example, I will shortly post an alternative IG list, but this will be for my own use only, and I have no delussions of official status for it, where other lists and discussion should concern only the official tournament lists. There are not any issues with registrations for any specific email domains at this time. That said, I have had to increase the security to check for spam registrations as we were getting a fair number of spam/advertising threads from bogus accounts. In these cases, it can take longer to get registrations approved, and some may slip through the system and get caught up. However, I do attempt to manually activate any accounts within 24 hours of getting an email, and I have added a note to the general 'welcome' email to ask users to drop me an email if their account is not approved quickly. Many thanks for your comments and feedback. I cant guarantee that any specific changes will be put into practice right away, but I will look at the issues that you note, and I welcome other comments and feedback here. All the best. |
