Hey CS,

One thing I have wondered occasionally is whether you would ever consider an off topic area for things like birthdays and general chit chat.  i know this can blow up if people get into religion/politics etc.  Perhaps there could be a code of ethics to avoid talking about such sensitive things.

Im only asking as there are a number of fantastic people that frequent these boards and occasionally it would be nice to chat outside of an epic context.

Please, please, please no.

I came here for game related posts. I don't want to see reams of OT posts show up when I search for new material.

It will dramatically reduce the usefulness of the site.

Well the Epic general discussion is pretty much such an area already so I'm not sure a new "general genereal discussion area" is really needed.

As long as the topics stay clear of politics and religion I don't really think anyone would mind you positing whatever you feel like there.

Running an OT area would require heavier moderation.

Indeed. We do have a 'catch-all' board in the General Discussion forum for anything that doesnt fit into other categories, and this is currently used for topics such as wargame or community related off topic discussion. It does also get the occassional really off-the-wall discussion. However, while I am happy for people to use this for almost any topic, most people come here with the intent of discussing wargames, and so these areas dont overpower the others - which is a good thing.

You know wwhat, now that I read the sub title of the general Epic board I realise that it is exactly what I was describing.  I was just concerned about the etiquette of discussing anything (within reason) in  that particular board and now see its specifically condoned.  Ho hum.  Put it down to a long night when I started this thread?

Nothing to see here, move along......

Not only that, but there are three general discussion forums. One for not talking about wargames, one for not talking about epic and one for not talking about battlefleet.

This board has way too many subforums as it is. One "General Discussion" board would be plenty!

Hehe, it does get a bit messy when people suddenly recieve 2 or 3 happy birthday threads :D

Aside from the birthday threads and other strange things people post (like a link to office nerf-missile wars and such) I think this is a bad, bad, bad idea.  The recent string of posts by a couple of boardmembers have IMO crossed the line.  And even in the face of gentle prods and hints like saying "you know this might not be the best place to post this type of thing" they continue to resurrect their own threads, responding to themselves, and other such nonsense.

As much as I like to hear from people on this forum, I can easily see these OT areas not only degenerating quickly but bringing in all manner of new non-wargaming people who would just make the place unbearable to visit.

I think a specific OT area could work as this forum is large enough to sustain one, but as I said before, it would need moderation to work well, and it's really up to Iain (Cybershadow) as to whether he wants to deal with that kind of work when there are plenty of other forums on the interweb that are perhaps more appropriate for such 'general discussions'.

I dont necessarily see that an OT area will bring lots of undesirables to the boards- by its design this is a small community with a relatively limited interest base.   Also people here do a good job of self/community censorship.  One good example of a small community where this sort of thing works is the Red Orchestra boards where the OT threads keep random stuff out of the way of the serious discussion.

I guess the question is do you see an OT area as somewhere to bring together all the existing random stuff into one pool (thats how I imagined it) or whether it will generate poor behaviour by its very nature which seems to be a common fear.
