I've been an adminstrator on a phpbb board as well, and we had to convert to an adminstrator granting access to new users, due to spambots as well. Whether this problem is the same with other board types, I have no idea, but while it does slow registration down, it does keep out most of the robots, so I agree that it's the right approach to take.
