I guess that there are worse problems to have than being too popular for the server! I will look into this. Thanks.

Is the site on dedicated hosting, or shared?

It's shared, which is causing the problems. Dedicated hosting is something that I really need to step up to, but the costs right now are prohibitive.

A VPS could be a good option, I could be wrong but I don't imagine the requirements are particularly heavy it's just that you can't change the max connections on shared hosting. If you have other websites it's easy to justify IMO. Not really sure how the forum software performs, you might be able to get away with a cheapo one (e.g. UK2's £80/year option).

Thanks. We are up for renewal in the Summer, so it will need to wait until then (if I can face moving the entire site again >:( ). I will make a diary note and check out UK2.

I know that feeling. I once moved a bunch of sites from a small ISP/hosting provider to their new outsourced infrastructure, and it was incredibly mundane.

Ha. Yeah. Mundane is pretty bad... until something goes wrong. Then, mundane seems ideal! :D

I have learnt, though. I now keep a folder with a copy of every update downloaded, with the version number and date that it was executed, so rebuilding should be routine.

It's the annoying little things like getting a time out on the FTP upload and not knowing which files went and which never made it.

I don't know if this is fallout from earlier, but some (but not all) of my unread posts aren't clearing after I read them. I also have posts that were previously read that have unread themselves and refuse to go away.

A bit more information, don't know if it'll help you, CS.

Most (but oddly not all) the threads that are remaining marked unread are ones I've replied to. If I hit "mark all forums read" they do go away, at least until another reply is posted. I think, but am not certain, that after another reply is posted in a thread that refused to clear, the same problem occurs. I suspect that threads that do clear continue to after another post, but have not been paying enough attention to that side to be sure.
