I am curious, has anyone broken the 1000 man rule for a space marine chapter? It was my plan to build a legion. Until, I was re-reading my rulebooks and came across the little fact that a chapter contained 1000 boots. I was hoping not to have to make multiple chapters. I wanted to be able to feild alot of guys from the same chapter. My friend and I do not play small.  }:) Although, epic army sizes seem to be getting smaller as each new version comes out. Any thoughts.

My second question is also about army size restrictions. Are there any for eldar? My buddy is amassing an eldar army, the likes of which, I have never seen. I know they are out of EA at the moment. I was just curious.

We were having this discussion a while ago, about Marines and their fleet for Gothic. The 1000 bodies is a fact which should be bend until broken. The original numbers were ten companys, or ten squads with ten men (Rogue Trader days). Now, this is all well and good, but ignores Dreads, tank drivers, support staff, command staff, chaplains, janitors and dinner ladies and so on. Additionally, Chapters such as the Space Wolves have loads of Marines, and the numbers also depend on casualties, and recruites and scouts, etc. So, I would not stick to the exact figure as a hard rule.

The thing about Epic forces getting smaller each edition is something that I was thinking about the other day. First edition had a great command and army structure, 40K was more compact and now EA looks to be 8-10 stands + support. Who knows, a couple more generations and we will be pushing the guys round the board individually!  :o

As for Eldar, I dont know about size restrictions. I guess that you are referring to the number of the guys with sharp sticks. I guess that it would depend on the CraftWorld. I can see Iyanden being smaller, but there are no hard laws for this.

Signius,

Go to:
http://www.games-workshop.com/40kuniv....ORS.pdf

In this very well done overview of the Marines they show two things.

1) in the chapter TO&E they list 10 squads per Company but then list "Bikes", "Dreadnaughts", "Land Speeders", All Command Marines (Captain, Chaplin, etc), Rhino Crew, and many others as separate listings. Even to the point that the Scout Company does not even list the number of squads.

2) They say that not all chapters follow the "book" as closely as others. So I would say do as you see fit. Besides if everything other then your Terminators, tactical, devastators, and assault do not count to that 1,000 man limit you could still field quite a large force points wise before you hit the limit. I mean think about it this way, 10 Terminator Squads alone are how many points?

Hi!

Net epic pays lip service to the 1000 man rule, but thats about it. I personally base my forces on Heresy era numbers of unlimited chapter size. Therefore most of my epic forces belong to an oversized Ultramarine chapter, although I'm starting an imperial fist one.

I dont think anyone should hamper themselves by this bit of fluff.

Ok, I know you are saying it doesn't matter. But how big an army are we talking about? 10, 20, 30 companies? How big are your armies, roughly? My dream is to reach a strength of ten thousand men. Am I dreaming. I have been going through the pain of gluing and forming companies. I have alot. I'll have a more accurate count soon.

Hi,

If you could have any models you wanted, for a 3k game... what what you field as a Genestealer Cult commander versus an attacking Eldar force?

The game is tomorrow, miniatures are not a problem, I have plenty just need help desciding what to take!

Well by the time you read this, it may be too late !  :o   But without knowing exactly what you have, let me say what we used to say in the Infantry, "There is no substitute for Fire Power !"  And based on what I see in the news, the "Grunts" still feel that way ...  :D    Good Luck ... :)

This is also probably a little late, but anyway... I have a feeling that Genestealers are going to have a tough time against the Eldar. You need to get in close and use concentrated firepower to wipe out as many as possibly before the run away.

If I understand the question, you are looking for units for the Commander formation. I would think that Hybrids wont be as useful as Purestrain, so I would upgrade a fair few stands. I would also add a few Psychers for the ranged attacks. Transports will also probably be very useful.

Good luck, and I look forward to hearing about it.

Yes, that was my point, too. A G/S Cult, like their 'Nid cousins, real strenght lie in their C/C abilities.  The Eldar can "hit & run", so you're going have to hit them at long range as they close in on you.  In our SM1 based G/S Cult we can have some IG vehicles as well as a Chaos "artifact weapon" (I showed this on an earlier post), and our Hybrids have heavy weapons, so we can get shots in, and then let the Genestealers do the close in work ...   By now though, Tom, you probably played the game, so yes tell, us how you whipped those "pointy-eared Vulcan want-a-bees" ...

Well insomnia's in full form so I thought I'd ask you smart folk a few questions that I've been indecisive on.

With Epic:Armageddon I want to start a new army that I can playtest with and such. I have several armies (LOTS of space marines, Eldar, Chaos, Orks, and Knights) dating back to Space Marine 2nd edition, but they're pretty dated. For starters the paint jobs are pretty awful (Blood Angels = Red Guy with little black line hopefully over his gun). They're all very much a product of their era as far as appearance and organization goes... they just look antiquated and visually uninspiring.

Since then my painting skills have significantly improved (I seriously tried dunking my blood angels in red paint at one point), and more importantly my desire to get involved with the aesthetic side is significantly more pronounced. So basically I want to start a new, pretty army, built around EA's force organizations.

All that long-winded exposition boils down to this:

Chaos. I'm almost positive I want to start a chaos army, for a number of reasons:

* I've got all sorts of ancient metal chaos stuff, like Lords of Battle and Magnus the Red and Daemons back from when they were really freaking tall

* With all the unbased plastic I've got, I have something like 10 different basic marine infantry units. Being able to have such dynamic stands is just really, really cool.

*I likes 'em a lot.

The problem is, Chaos seems to be a bit of a mess currently, with an uncertain future. The Black Legion list seems like it could potentially be an abortion, and people seem(ed) to be whining en masse about how it's really unbalanced. Currently, no one seems to really be discussing the list, further implying that its gone down the tubes. Even worse, Chaos is scheduled dead last to get full support.

Some of you guys have been following this more closely then I, so my first question to you is if you think starting a Chaos army this early might be a bit premature or unwise. Is Chaos, at this stage, really a feasible and balanced army?

Second question: If you look closely at the 2nd edition Chaos Plastics, each of the four primary traitor legions is represented. Has anyone ever tried to specifically use those models to represent that legion? Specifically, since Thousand Sons have got some mention in here, how do you represent the 1kSons' whole headdress thing? I'm looking for ideas on how to do a Tzeentch legion since thats what I've mostly got, and 'cus TZEETNZTNTNCH IZ KOOL. :D

Third Question: I'd like to rebase and repaint some of my mini's. How do you guys rebase infantry, and how do you guys go about stripping paint from 6mm's? Do you just let the guys individually soak in your solvent of choice, or do you keep them on the base?

Okay, bye bye. :D

-Periodic.

Hey:  I would say at the moment, chaos is not feasible.  The list will undoubtedly be updated dramatically, so there's no real point in even trying to put anything together based on what's out.

As far as Tzeentch, there is little chance they will get a decent treatment any time soon.  So, unless you are doing it for your own amusement (and I am), I wouldn't go crazy.  I understand the Black Legion and Lost and Damned lists being out first, but after that it's likely to be Khorne and Nurgle because they are the most popular.  There seems to be little support for Tzeentch in 40K, and I expect that will spill over.

As far as stripping, there might still be a thread on the 6mm conversions page of the forums.  Several people on here had large pieces of text and links that they can post which would no doubt be more informative than I.

You might want to use what you have until the rules solidify a little more. I had to redo my Orks several times. In fact, some of the infantry units still have odd numbers. I reccomend building and painting the vehilces and waiting on the infantry until two or more revisions pass with the playtest rules.

Of course, you could do what I did and just start painting and darn the changes!  :D

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

The E-A Chaos list is still "under construction", so I'd wait or paint and base at your own risk ... I've been playing Epic since SM1 in '90 and I've learned to do what works for us and not necessarily what G/W says.  We still use the SM1 templates with some modifications, based on new releases.  Do what works for you ... :;):

Before you do anything, I would look at the new list. As others have said, the changes the chaos list could go through might be major (sort of chaos'ish like! :p ).

The new list can be found at:

G'day!

I had exactly the same thoughts but am contenting myself with just collecting the figures at the moment.  I'll finish up my Ork and IG armeis and see what happens with the GW list.  If I'm not happy with the official lists, I'll be going the way of L4; my own!

You 'll find the thread on stripping plastic minis at:
