I think the gems will look odd.
The only way they may look mildly okay, would be if they were orange or red.
I currently use the Epic40K and BFG ones. I will make my own one day. But I've said that about so many things.

So, I don't know why I hadn't thought of that idea before. I sort of like it, actually. If I decide to use the gems, I'll take a trip down to the craft store and buy a bucketfull for $3 instead of paying GW blister prices. That's a definite. What are y'all's opinions on the idea? I think they would be much more durable, but I'm not convinced about the on-board look. Perhaps it should be in the modeling section, but what other ideas have you guys had for BMs? I think these are the most common: the cardstock cutouts from E40K steel wool, shaped and painted dyed cotton balls I also thought of using little styrofoam craft balls. Cut them in half and mount them on washers. Cut/score them so they will melt into an explosion shape. Spray them with black paint, which will partially melt them and tends to leave the black on the outer edges. Wash them with orange paint/ink, making a bright core with black outer highlights. It would be cheap and easy, but sort of annoyingly time-consuming. |

I use the BFG blasts, they seem to be made of more durable card than the Epic40K ones, and since they're flat they're easier to pack for transporting. |

Awhile ago that Sword guy in the Epic Playtesting vault suggested using dice so I tried it and I am sold on that. ?I have red, white, and black GW dice so I just use the red ones for blast markers. ? The gem thing sounds okay, and anything is better than the Epic40k ones. ?I know GW tried, but they were just too fragile and looked like donkey-doo after a few games. I just wish that they would just change the name 'blast markers'. I hate it. I'd rather call them surpression markers or something. |

Craft Stores are Full of great stuff ! ? Always worth a look. But I still have not seen the G/W "Gems" ... where are there pics of them ?

Beer bottle caps. They are easy to see, readily avaliably and will last practically forever! The idea for gemstones is a novel one, but I can't see it catching on. Cheers Chris |

We use the gems for epic 40k games , red ones for a single blast marker, and gold ones for 5 blast markers. They work very well, are cheap, and don't require a lot of time modeling things. The card BM's suck, and the only problem with dice is that , with really large games, you have a lot of dice on the board already. Anyway, just buy a baggie of them and try it, won't cost you that much. my 2cents, iblisdrax |

A while back, a friend made a set of those steel wool blast markers. Smaller for singe blasts, bigger for five blasts, and some HUGE for ten blasts, if I recall correctly. Have to say, they did look absolutely stunning (and from what I remember, were even pretty easy to make). The downside was that while they were even more durable than what I had feared, they really didn't take transport very well, and therefore their use was pretty much limited to games in the friend's house. Nowadays, BFG markers are what we use, as they are available, easy to transport and look ok. |

Well, for $2US I bought a bag of more gems than I can ever imagine needing in a game. Since I had a 50% off coupon, I rather doubt I'll not get my $1 worth out of them.
