Greetings

This is my first post on these forums so please don't be too harsh.

The last time I played EPIC was over 10 years ago when it was in the guise of Space Marine (second eddition) although I do still have my Adeptus Titanicus (first eddition).

I got back into GW wargaming a couple of years ago primarily WFB and Mordheim but also 40K.  Having been to Gamesday and spent some time at the Fanatic stand I'm quite interested in getting back into EPIC and have started repainting a couple of my old Titans.

My question is this how easy will it to be for me to pick up the new rule book and get playing?  Does it differ much from the eddition I'm used to?  I seem to have missed the last incarnation of EPIC so I know I'll be a little out of date but by how much?

I used to play Squats but I realise that they no longer exist in the 40K universe but will I be able to use them or is it a completely new army for me?  If so I'll probably go for tyranids as that's what I play in 40K and I really like the Forge World Harridan (so much so I bought one)

Sorry for the barrage of questions but I new  :)

Cheers

Vogon

Hi and welcome to the forums

My question is this how easy will it to be for me to pick up the new rule book and get playing?

Well the rulebook should be out Feb 2004, but in the meantime you can download the rules from here

http://www.specialist-games.com/epic40k/Vault.htm

Does it differ much from the edition I'm used to?
Well the first thing to say is that there are plenty of people out there who are still playing SM 2nd Edition and the internet variant, netepic. Epic Armageddon is different, but will have elements of SM in it. The question you should be asking is do I want lots of detail and lots of flavour for every unit in my game, or do you want less detail and a more strategic game.

I seem to have missed the last incarnation of EPIC so I know I'll be a little out of date but by how much?
not much and it isn't going to take much to get up to speed

Well you may find a Squat list on the EA Yahoo group and there may be a Demiurg (sp?) list (which will be the new Squats).

Hope that helps

Hi!

Welcome to the forum Vogon, enjoy your stay.

Your questions comprise a whole slew of "issues" which you should count yourself lucky not to be biased with.

The third encarnation of epic (epic40k) to put it mildly created a schism amongst epic gamers. The game did not fair well in support from GW and sales wise it was abysmal. Epic went from a core game to out of print for the first time.  It took 7 years for GW to come up with another version of epic after that "debacle".

Needless to say things have changed since you played SM second edition, I suggest you try to pick up Epic 40k (epic third edition) and download the playtest rules for epic A and try them out and come to your own conclusions which you like best.

Support for SM second edition comes in the form of "net epic". Its a fan based variant of second edition for those who favor the older system. It has rules for all the latest epic models not released after SM was discontinued and has a host of rule changes while keeping the same core mechanics. I coordinate that effort so I can answer any questions you have.

The netepic rules, army lists and army cards can be downloaded at: www.netepic.org

I think you should have no problem picking up E-A rules. And I agree mostly with what both Jimbo & Primarch have said.  Be advised this is a completely new version of Epic and there is much of E-A that I like.  And I have been playing Epic since SM1 in '90, so I, like Jimbo & Primarch, are "old timers" and don't make our comments lightly.  Check it out ... :;):   And welcome aboard ! :D

I made a Squat list for E-A a while ago. It is based on the NetEpic Squat list which, in turn, is based on SM2 list. If you want to, you can drop me a PM with your email address included and I'll send it to you. At present it does not include any point values; I am still not familiar of the point value system in E-A. Oh, and it is in "Word" format... }:)

Vogon,

Welcome to the boards. You've already received advice from some of the best (Jimbo and Primarch among others), but I'll add in what I can as well.

My question is this how easy will it to be for me to pick up the new rule book and get playing?

Very easy. The game has some similarities that should make it familiar. You still will have to learn the new rules, but it's no problem to do so. E-A is the most streamlined rule set yet for 6mm Epic gaming.

Does it differ much from the eddition I'm used to?

Some, but not too much.

I seem to have missed the last incarnation of EPIC so I know I'll be a little out of date but by how much?

It's not too bad, It's do-able.

Where did you get the name "Vogon" from?

It reminds me of the cult classic film "Krull."

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Greetings

Thanks all for the information and advise, I'll be going to have a look at those other websites and have downloaded the rules from the Specialist Games website.

In reply to Maksim Smelchak the name Vogon comes from the Douglas Adams Books The Hitch Hikers guide to the Galaxy and are responsible for the destruction of the earth in the opening chapters.  This is also where my Sig comes from.

To Mojarn Piett I'll send you a PM with my email and thanks.

yes, that's a great book !

Welcome here Vogon, (if i'm not too new myself to greet other people as if it were my home) !

Others have answered your questions, so 'ill just add that like you, i played SM2/TL a lot, but had leave the hobby and never tried Epic40K (even if i heard about it...). I decided to throw a look at Epic 40K rules, currently in playtesting, mostly after seeing pics of the new (from forgeworld) or future Epic minis, and lo ! I consider this game the best epic game i know of.

But those are just my personal tastes and opinions...

So, I don't know why I hadn't thought of that idea before.  I sort of like it, actually.

If I decide to use the gems, I'll take a trip down to the craft store and buy a bucketfull for $3 instead of paying GW blister prices.  That's a definite.

What are y'all's opinions on the idea?  I think they would be much more durable, but I'm not convinced about the on-board look.

Perhaps it should be in the modeling section, but what other ideas have you guys had for BMs?  I think these are the most common:

the cardstock cutouts from E40K
steel wool, shaped and painted
dyed cotton balls

I also thought of using little styrofoam craft balls.  Cut them in half and mount them on washers.  Cut/score them so they will melt into an explosion shape.  Spray them with black paint, which will partially melt them and tends to leave the black on the outer edges.  Wash them with orange paint/ink, making a bright core with black outer highlights.

It would be cheap and easy, but sort of annoyingly time-consuming.

I use the BFG blasts, they seem to be made of more durable card than the Epic40K ones, and since they're flat they're easier to pack for transporting.

I think the gems will look odd.

The only way they may look mildly okay, would be if they were orange or red.

I currently use the Epic40K and BFG ones.  I will make my own one day.  But I've said that about so many things. :L

Awhile ago that Sword guy in the Epic Playtesting vault suggested using dice so I tried it and I am sold on that. ?I have red, white, and black GW dice so I just use the red ones for blast markers. ?

The gem thing sounds okay, and anything is better than the Epic40k ones. ?I know GW tried, but they were just too fragile and looked like donkey-doo after a few games.

I just wish that they would just change the name 'blast markers'.  I hate it.  I'd rather call them surpression markers or something.
