I’m toying with trying out a planetfalling Manta 3k list and that makes it a bit more viable.

Tau Ethereal rules say “All units in a formation joined by an Ethereal become Fearless”. Two Tau units are intermingled and get combined assaulted. One has an Ethereal. If the Tau lose the whole formation is fearless while the Ethereal is with them and so neither unit suffers extra casualties for losing the assault (though conversely the whole lot auto-breaks if the Ethereal dies). Yes? 1.12.10 says “For the purposes of the assault, the intermingled formation is treated as being a single formation.” 1.12.1 suggests to me the results of the assault and withdrawal are part of the assault not something happening afterwards. |

Yes? Only happened once in games I played using Tau but this is how we interpreted it also. |

1.12.10 implies that the formations are one right up until the withdrawal. As that happens after casualties are removed I'd say that all the intermingled Tau formations are fearless if one has an Ethereal. |
