Post subject:  Barraged war engines.

I've recently seen a different interpretations of how a maximised barrage on a war engine works. (This tends to only happen with a 4bp +, 2 template situation where The attacker wants to hit a second unit nearby).
The rules set that to maximise (and get 1\2 the DC to hit) the war engine needs to be
"Directly under the centre" of the barrage.
The issue seems to be with 'directly' .

To give an example, I've seen it played where the centre of the template (or at least the hole in the centre of the template) was over a warlords foot, and this was played as directly under. - I would suggest that if directly under is read literaly, the centre (actual) of the template would need to be over the centre of the model (in this case the warlords head).

I wanted to check how others play it?

The rules only mention the center of the template, and that it has to be over the WE. So any part of the WE counts for this: foot, head, tail, etc.

Thanks Dave, - I think the word "directly" is the issue.
If it has meant any part under the centre, then 'directly' is a redundancy; adversely it suggests the greater part of the war engine being under the template.
Nothing massively important, but the interpretation does impact the efficiency of barrages.

I could hazard a guess on why directly was included (probably because of the 1cm hole at the center of most templates) but Epic is built on language and examples all similar to this. It gets pretty messy awfully quick when you start doing that.

Ya, barrages are more powerful against WEs playing it like that. Having done it that way for at least ten years I haven't seen BP units dominating WE heavy games though. If it bothers you, house-rule it. I don't think it works out to much of a difference though in practice.
