Post subject:  First round of assault with no units directly engaged?

We had an interesting situation come up yesterday. A single surviving Thousand Sons Marines unit with a character upgrade assaulted a formation of Stormboyz. The Marines positioned themselves so that only one or two Stormboyz could have fought back, and only in a firefight.

The TS player also had his Warp Palace within supporting fire range. However, as the Warp Palace was actually closer to all of the Stormboyz units than the Marines, I could counter-charge all of my Stormboyz out of 15 cm range of the Marines, without engaging the Warp Palace. So now nobody has any units directly engaged in the first round of the assault.

How is this resolved?

The assault stalls, and the TS activations is over.

Quote:
1.12.3 Make Charge Move

Once the move is complete, the engaging formation must have at least one unit within 15cms of a unit from the target formation. If this is not the case then the assault does not take place and the action ends.

And

Quote:
1.12.4 Counter Charges

All the normal charge move rules apply.

Ah, thanks. That also makes a lot more sense than trying to resolve the "combat" and the attacker then automatically losing due to having no surviving units directly engaged :)
