Post subject: | MiniWars feedback request |
Hi All, I've just trawled through 150+ proxy suggestions and added them to the database: http://miniwars.co.uk/epic/units There are many I'd never seen before, which keeps things interesting. I few didn't fit IMO, or had such bad photographs I haven't found the time to Photoshop them to an acceptable level yet. Overall the number of proxies out there now is impressive! I don't have time to be proactive about adding models, so keep the suggestions coming. Onto the feedback request. --- I'm not satisfied with some functions and the structure of the Epic section on MiniWars. Also I'm not convinced it's worth keeping some of the data. Players - The map function is whizzy, but I don't have the time or technical know-how to scale it properly. To make it work with over 500 players I really need an AirBnB style map that only displays players that are in view on the map, and updates on pan. If anyone can help with this, they are welcome. Otherwise I'm thinking I'll bin the map at some point and stick to lists of players (they can still be listed in order of distance from the person searching). Unit stats - is this needed? It was meant as a single point of reference for all EA stats, and allows me to generate army lists that are displayed in phone / tablet compatible formats. However, since MiniWars seeded the NetEA TP (http://www.tp.net-armageddon.org/) the data has been full of formatting errors. Also EpicUK stats are unfinished and I don't have the time or inclination to finish them. Unfortunately, the proxy database is built around the idea that proxies are associated with game units, rather than phyiscal models... Get Started section - is this needed? It's supposed to be an introduction for those getting into Epic, with descriptions of the various groups (NetEA, EpicUK, EpicFR etc.) together with a one-stop shop for finding rules and lists. If it's to stay, it needs fleshing out and re-organsing. Events - probably will be binned. No interest. Inspiration - Would be cool to have more Epic armies on here... Anything else? Anything that could be improved / should be dumped / should be added? Note that nothing (much) will happen in the near future. I'd rather be painting! ![]() |

Yeah unit stats and getting started can go the way of the dinosaur. the biggest thing I can think of that needs to be handled is that the UI isn't clear about the whole "500 newest memebers..." yada yada yada. Almost every time I bring up MW player finder on FB, questions basically arising from the confusing UX inevitably occur generally following the pattern of "I put myself on there and now I am gone". However it's likely in that whole tech whiz bang bit you bring up so ...known issue =/ |

I think perhaps making the controls to drive the map clearer and more in your face would help. Honestly putting 3 radio (or other driver) buttons to capture the UX gesture (even if it defaults to one or the other) above the map aligned with "By date", "Near Me", and "By Game/System" would be good. Drive them, respectively, with filters as "calendar control", "postal/city textbox" (you can use IP to narrow location if not logged in, otherwise pull from interactive profile), and "select box" with list of supported systems. As you select between them, the current values drive the map rendering. just throwing it out there |

Thanks for the feedback JZ, I agree with everything you say. Map rendering as you suggest would be a challenge. Would be cool alongside render on pan. Maybe I'll bite the bullet at some point and spend time figuring it out. |

REaly like the proxy list. THumps up for all the work you put into it. Would be cool to have more armies, like the skitarii, knights and so on in the proxy list. Personally dont care if stats are there or not. But maybe link to newest list, ruleset and sub forum here? Mentioned it before, but here i go again, so you have them together. Linking similar models, space marine/chaos something, different chapter terminators, for easily finding proxies for converting. Really like the page, it have been very useful for me, and thank you for making it. |

Thanks, rubberlizard! Missing armies are on the to-to list. Good idea about linking models. I shall add it to the ideas list. |

About unneeded parts, i would keep them as they are, it would save you time for more important things too. If someone appears that wants to expend them, let them. Inspiration: i can convince several people to share their photos, but i am not sure about convincing most of them to create an account, so as far as it doesn't matter if my nick is shown in all, it is OK. Unit stats is highly unneeded but ''Getting started'' section could be good, as far as i know there isn't, and Miniwars could work as a center of general information. I saw there is an option for appointing new alternative miniatures, but what i am most interested is in filling the gaps in Official GW miniatures. Are you keeping that feature for yourself or did i miss that option? |

@Abetillo - I understand some people might not want to create an account. Feel free to add the pictures to your own if you like. Official GW miniatures - I'd love to fill all these gaps. Anyone can send them in but I have quite strict rules for the photos as I want it to be inspiration as well as information: - minis should be well painted - good quality photo - presented against white / black / other solid colour / subtile texture (I don't ask for these criteria for proxies, because there's just no chance I'll ever get any images.) Are you asking for a submission form for pictures of GW minis - similar to proxies? |

I really like the map. I check it almost every day recently to see if there are any new players that may have signed up in my area. Sadly there aren't but it is a feature I really enjoy. I would hate to see it go. |

Glad you like it, RZ. I would love to keep the map and make it more elegant. Put it this way: Plan A will be to rebuild the map with a user experience similar to AirBnB. The footnote for Plan A is I need to figure out how to do this or find somebody who can help. |

What's the specific issue at the moment? It seems to work fine. You just want to show individual markers rather than clusters? The current approach uses the marker clustering library: https://developers.google.com/maps/docu ... clustering |
