So it looks like to satisfy my epic itch I will have to dip my toes into the Armageddon pond. As my only potential player is a geddon head.
:nooo

So as to not have to rebase models to get character upgrades into units, I was wondering what other people have done to indicate that there is a particular character in a stand without having to remake them?

My first thought is to make up individual characters on smaller bases to sit next to or "be attached" to a particular stand.

Any other options? Anyone done the above and have examples they would be willing to show?

Matt

The character-model-as-marker idea works well, especially for guard who may want to add commissars to vehicles etc

Normally I'd stick a marker or token next to the model

I just add the Character to a separate base or on one of the stands depending ... some of my examples ... http://s48.photobucket.com/user/Legion4 ... t=3&page=7

yeah I've got a large enough set of forces where I've got pretty much any option covered but before then, or when testing, I've just used a chit of paper to indicate the character. That might work for you Matt as I've found in EA that after you get the game under your belt, so to speak, you really quickly end up with a set of builds with characters that work for you and people just end up modeling them that way. There's a few people that have used a magnet and a free slot to actually replace a figure / add a figure to which was pretty sweet actually. How you model and present may make that difficult/undesired though. Another approach I've seen is a "min-base" that people make for the character that they just put touching the stand and move together.

I use 3mm rare earth magnets glued on the base of the character and steel washers for bases. I model a little crater in the flock of an infantry base. If I want to add a character to the base I just put it in the crater.

Pro's - flexibility if you jump ship across different versions of rules and army lists.
Con's - don't drop the base on the floor! Looking for a 6mm commissar in the middle of a tournament isn't fun!

There's some examples in my blog if you want to see some pics.

I pop characters on 5p pieces and place them next to the stand / model they are attached to.

The bases are different sizes and shapes so there is no confusion and I can move them around depending on where I want them. Nice and simple.

Anyone know if you can still get the smaller 3 hole bases that Steel Crown did for Exodus wars. Checked the store on HLS, but can't see them as separate items.

I remember seeing them and if you look at some of the pics you can see some models on smaller bases (sniper teams and mortar teams etc).
