Post subject:  New to Epic - Help with basing

I am new to Epic and have purchased the following off eBay: Space Marine 1st Edition boxed set, Imperial Guard box (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Y-5YbY9rHHU/T ... C_1046.JPG) and a Space Marine sprue.

Since the units in Space Marine are clearly different to the ones in Epic: Armageddon, could someone please help me with the following questions:
1. What models go on a Tactical Squad base?
2. What models go on a Devastator Squad base?
3. How do I base characters? Is it one Captain and four standard marines, or is it one HQ stand with Captain, Librarian, banner, etc.?
4. How many Rough Riders go on each base?
5. Are Sentinels based individually or do I fit multiples on each base? Same question re. Space Marine Dreadnoughts?
6. Can I use the square bases that come with Space Marine, or do I have to use the rectangular bases that came in later editions?
7. What can I use the Imperial Guard gunners as?

Thanks in advance.

#4
It seems rather common to see 2 to a base but because of peoples limited ability to fine some models occasionally it's not at all rare to see one to a base. As long as its obvious what they are your opponent shouldn't have any issues with it.

#5
I do one each for both. I pretty sure that's rather ubiquitous. Again, as long as it's clear what it is.

#7.
Most guard infantry get a heavy weapon shot for every other stand (rounded up) so people sometimes liberally put then into their stands. It's in no way required, mind you. There's an actual Heavy Weapons unit but they're pretty rare to see them played. Easy enough to plunk a couple on a stand and put some sandbags or other fun stuff to model them with the gunners.

That's #4-6 taken care of. Thanks! Just missing the Space Marine-specific questions #1-3. For #7, I am concerned about both the IG guys carrying a heavy weapon on their shoulder, and the IG gunners who just seem to be crew members for artillery.

1. 4 bolter marines and 1 missile launcher marine.
2. 3 bolter marines and 2 missile launcher marines.
3. captai/librarian/chaplain + 4 models of the unit it belongs to. Supreme commander i would do a stand with SC-model, Chaplain, Librarian and captain + 1 more model of your choice.

Ahh crap now I click on your link and see what box you mean. Yeah you're talking about the standing up guy with his hands in his sides. They make for good use with thud guns or rapiers or whatnot. If you get ahold of the old 3rd edition basilisk they work well there too.

I've used some of those IG artillery crew guys as sergeants and officer models as well.

Blurry phone pics for the most part but if you squint you can make them out. :D

I did one sergeant and one heavy weapon per two bases to match the 40k version of this army. They are purely cosmetic in gaming terms, but add a bit of variety visually.

Also remember there's a lot of counts-as modeling that occurs in this game as well. For instance, what's the real difference at this scale for the differences of Rough Riders versus Bikers, really? Not much and in fact it's very common to see the latter counts-as the former for modeling purposes. This means you've got quite a bit of freedom to play around with your modeling collections

From the NetEA Tournament Pack, 1.1.2. "Stands":
"A stand may be no more than 40mm and no less than 5mm across in any direction"

My question is: how do you base an Emperor Titan? I think 40mm is not enough to fit such a big miniature.

That's referring to infantry and light vehicles, not anything else. In fact, basing armored vehicles and war engines (non titans) is a fairly recent development.

I am slowly getting the hang of all this and have been painting up my first few units of Imperial Fists, but I still have a few more questions.

1. With the Commander upgrade, is its representation based on the unit to which it's attached (e.g. adding a Commander to a Land Raider formation means adding a Command Land Raider to the formation, whereas adding a Commander to a Tactical formation means adding an infantry base containing a Captain and four bolter Space Marines)?

2. Also, am I correct in understanding that the Commander is an extra base/vehicle on top of the existing models in the formation (e.g. 4 Land Raiders + 1 Command Land Raider), or does it replace one of the existing models (e.g. 3 Land Raiders + 1 Command Land Raider)?

3. Strike Cruisers and Battle Barges sound really big. Are they actually represented by models on the board, or are they off-board units?

4. Is there any use for Apothecary and Techmarine models in E:A?

Thanks for your patience with my noob questions.

1. Yes, where you add the commander character to is what the unit is. So with the Land Raider, he's riding in his blinged out tank :)
2. As Dave likes to describe it, the character is wargear. He's added to the unit, not an additional unit to the formation. So a Land Raider formation has 4 tanks; With a Commander, it is 4 tanks with one of them selected to hold the character.
3. Correct, they're in orbit. A Cobra class destroyer from BFG is something like 5 foot long in Epic. The battle barges would be bigger than most rooms ;)
5. Techmarines actually are found as a character in the Imperial Fists list so there's easy application there. However in general case, no, they're usually used to pimp out a command stand to make the unit more identifiable on the table but don't have an actual game effect. I'd use them for modeling purposes purely myself (or IF Tech Marines). For instance, it could be really cool to use the apocathary stand and paint a white rhino for them in a tactical formation to ciunt-as a commander upgrade in a visually interesting way.

Post subject:  Re: New to Epic - Help with basing

Does that mean that if I add a Captain to a Devastator formation one of the stands loses its missile launchers and gains a power weapon instead, or does it end up with both? How does that work if the Captain is in a Land Raider: does the Land Raider gain a Power Weapon also, or is the Captain a stand of infantry that can disembark from the Land Raider?

Thanks again.

The attacks and abilities are added to, not instead if, to the chosen unit.

So, basically this=>
