Post subject:  creating new units / points per model

After having played Heresy, Future War Commander and Epic 40k for a while I read the E:A rules and am quite interested to give it a go. Problem is that I am not willing to use the rigid structure of existing army lists. I play with casual gamers and I don't want to play tournaments. I am happy with the models I own and I want to use them freely as I see fit. For lots of units I can can identify a point cost by model (f.e. Landraider = 75 pts. each) from the existing lists, but others are harder. 6 Tacticals + Transports = 275 pts. I'd like to know how much pts. ONE Tactical or ONE Rhino would be. To make it short: I like the rules for E:A, but I prefer the open army creation of Epic 40.000 that gives me more freedom in play. Is there a point cost formula for E:A people use to write all those different army lists?

Thanks a lot. :)

The division method you're using should work well in most cases, there's no set formula. The costs you see are reflective of playtesting over the past 10 years with the tournament scenario and terrain .

Just remember that the strategy rating and initiative of the units will affect the cost as well. On top of that, there's usually a surcharge (~25 points) for being a formation. As an example, two formations of 6 Tactical units is worth 550 by the Codex list but three formations of 4 Tactical units would probably be work 575-600. Also, messing with the scenario and terrain can skew those values as well.

I'd probably put a cost of 40 points to a Tactical and 10 to a Rhino. That be close enough to approximate something fair in a game.

There simply is no correct cost per unit - the value of a unit varies with the size of formation, due to break point (interaction with casualties and blast markers) and activations. The correct cost will always be for a formation, and even that will be unique for a given list for a given scenario, due to the stuff Dave outlined.

Since you're going to play casual games anyway, it should be fine to have a look at a formation from a GT list and guesstimate the cost.

The cost, as said above, is not fixed but a product of the list itself (if your interested in more details we're sure to be happy to bore you with them ;D ). For your purposes, I'd take the Codex list, subtract 25 points from the formation and then divide by the number of units. Good enough to goverenment work, as they say. Provided you follow the same with all sides, you'll have a relatively equal starting point for friendly play. After some games you all may find that you want to increase / decrease points.

Thanks to you all! I was allready in doubt a formula exists. E:A features some nice ideas, like the CC and FF mechanic. I also like the more individual weapon characteristics and overall simplicity. I think there are really cool generic systems for 28mm, but still nothing on the 6mm side that could convince me totally. Either I wait another Millenium for Polyversal or I'll try to do something homebrew.

Thanks again, the support here is great. :)
