Post subject:  Noob Question on rules versions

Hi everyone. I'm getting back into Epic after many years of just focussing on Warmaster - I guess I need to scratch that 40K itch (but don't want to play 40K!). I have played all the original versions of the game going back to Space Marine and Adeptus Titanicus. I have played and still own Epic Armageddon and Stormwind, the last 'official' books/versions of the game and so here is where I think I want to start.

I already own a 10K Dark Angels army and am in the process of re basing it all onto the Troublemaker games round bases. I intend to build up traitor guard over the next year. (Blood Pact but using the IG list)

1. Does anyone here still play the last official version of the rules - the 'original' Epic Armageddon or has it been replaced in the community by net epic (or is it net epic Armageddon?). Are these one and the same? The net epic version doesn't appear to have blast marker rules?
2. Having skimmed the net epic gold pdf (excellent, very professional by the way!) is this like old 1st edition space marine with the cards but with more army lists and tidied up rules?
3. Is one of these rule sets 'dominant' in terms of community numbers or do people play a range of versions?

Basically my instinct is to be lazy and stick with what I have rule books wise as its the version I played last and am most familiar with but I don't want to do this if its a turkey and everyone else is playing something different. I suspect I'll be able to persuade my local gang to go along with whatever version I decide to kick off with.

Any advice welcome!

Merry Christmas everyone

Dave :P :P

We still play epic armageddon as written in the rulebook, it hasnt been replaced with anything new, we have just developed new lists for the game and tweaked the rulebook and swordwind lists to better balance them

There are two main groups producing lists, NetEA, which is a continuation of the community development Jervis set up, it is open and all inclusive and global, and EpicUK who focus on lists for the UK tournament scene, there is a lot of crossover between the two and for the most part the lists are similar

NetEpic is a totally different game, AFAIK it is a revamp of the second edition of the game, there are a few players dotted around this board but I have zero experience with it as I havent played sm2 since the mid-90s

I would say the E:A community is probably quite a bit bigger, we have an active tournament scene here in the UK (details at www.epic-uk.co.uk) and always welcome new players, the scene is friendly-yet-competetive and nothing at all like the WAAC 40k and WFB tournament scenes

NetEpic is an updated version of SM2/Titan Legions, although there will be some similarities to SM1 by default, since SM2 built on SM1 ;). For more information, start by looking at this topic, and then you may also want to head over to the NetEpic boards here: viewforum.php?f=14

More people play Epic Armageddon, but there are still a fair few people who play NetEpic, and if your gaming group has access to armies from the SM2 era, it's actually pretty easy to put together NetEpic forces if you'd rather stick to that than play Epic Armageddon.

Thanks for the info. For now I'll stick with building up my forces for Epic Armageddon and try to get 2 or 3 mates locally into it. If I succeed and after we've played a few games then we might check out the community tournaments etc.

Glad to hear its not that competitive as I'm past all that - I just want to have a fun, reasonably balanced game and admire painting and modelling ideas from others.

Cheers

Dave

yeah we're a friendly bunch.... I play regularly with 3 of the top players, don't win often but the games are always enjoyable

same goes for tournaments, I've been playing at tournaments fairly regularly for the past 3 years or so, and I've not had a single game I haven't enjoyed, win or lose, it's a great scene and I'm sure you'd fit right in

there are some stunning armies doing the rounds, Reedar's bad moon orks are fantastic, so are RichardL's Iyanden, Yme-Loc's Biel-Tan and anything Kev101 brings along... amongst many others!

What kyuss said. The TP website in my sig has the latest and greatest FAQ and NetEA approved (read: most play tested/balanced) lists.
