A tau hero class space ship has 2 pinpoint attacks. The rules state that I can choose any target WE I want.

Quote:
4.3.4 Pin-Point Attacks
Pin-point attacks may be made on enemy war engines (war engines are the only things big enough for a spacecraft to pick out on the battlefield). Pick a target anywhere on the table and then attack it with any pin- point attacks the spacecraft may have. You may target different war engines with each pin-point attack if you wish, or concentrate all of the attacks on a single target. Note that you do not need to record the co-ordinates of pin- point attacks.

How is this handled in relation to formations of several war engines (like for instance a IG Super heavy tank company)?

1) The way I understand the rules means I could choose two different WE from the same formation?. Thereby bypassing the ordinary rules for shooting at a formation of WE (eg. closest is hit first, second attack would hit the same target if the first shot doesn't allocate enough damage points worth of damage). Is my interpretation correct?

2) Are the two pin point attacks counted as two separate occansion when shooting at a formation of several WE? I mean if I were to shoot at two WE from different formations then I'd get to place 1 BM for coming under fire on each formations/WE. But if I fire at two WE from the same formation would I then place 2 BM on the formation for coming under fire (counting the pin points as two separate attacks) or would I place just the 1 BM. The latter option would of course make for a slight disadvantage compared to choosing two WE from different formations as targets.

1) that's how we play
2) I'd say yes againif targeting the same formation just 1 BM

1 - That is how we play it ("I could choose two different WE from the same formation").
2 - I'd say 1BM would be placed if targeting 2 WE's from the same formation. It's already a big advantage to be able to target 2 separate WE's without the bonus of placing an extra BM.

The same here. Sniper from orbit is a little gamey though, I always wondered how they new where the Commissar was.

They'd likely be called in by local commanders on the satellite phone equivalent. It seems to be how it works in the novels.

Commissar vehicles are painted black normally so they stand out from the camouflaged ones.

Certainly different from how I used to use heroes when shooting we formations (treating them as a target formation from the position of the spacecraft deployed as per the rules in the space craft section - indeed the note on targeting seems to make little sense otherwise?). Anyway - death to the commissars!
