Can you choose to selectively couter charge with a detachment? For example, a IG inf comp has been charged by an Ork mob, can the IG commander choose to counter charge while the remaining infantry stand and fire (as all good IG should)?

Sure. Only limitation is that you have to counter charge towards the nearest enemy and that as soon as you enter enemy ZOC you have to try to get into base contact.

To ask you question another way: are all stands required to mice when counter charging?
If so then NO. Or to put it another way, they all counter charge but 0cm :)

Also, should that Commander charge, OR should he hang back?

Depends is he a bog standard commander and does he have the commissar with him? Is it turn 3 and will winning the engagement win the game? I'd generally keep the supcom well out of harns way and commissars are most valuable alive.....

I put my commissar in a separate unit from the commander's unit, would I benefit from adding him to the commanders unit? The rule states that you add him to the formation, I assume I can do it my way, question is, should I?

In regular companies, I put the commissar with the commander (fearless is good protection) but not in the sc's stand. 2 leaders are too valuable to waste. If I would split them, it would be because I put the commissar in a more durable and/or cc-oriented upgrade (read ogryns)

Baneblades and Ogryns and Commissars are a fun powerful combo. The Super Heavies have the ability reach out and touch someone and the ogryns can hug the baneblade for cover and protect it from infantry swarms as an ablative Assault shield. The commissar has benefits in both formations so harder to categorically state one is better than the other (though I tend to lean towards fearless superheavies)

Mmmmm like that idea, would it work with Shodowswords, I have those? Also, how many stands of Ogryns do you use?

yes it works with shadowswords, DC3 4+RA Commissars are pretty sweet....

@fredmans I tried keeping the commissar on a separate stand but a non-fearless supcom is too vulnerable in my experience, two leaders is nice, but it tends to either be overkill, or still not enough to leave you free of blast markers, in my experience, the fearless supcom is the better option :)

Heh, I would give the opposite advice. The supreme is so important to an IG player it's always worth having the Commissar with the actual supreme stand so that the fearless saves it from getting killed in combat resolution or by blast markers when broken. There are pluses and minuses to having the Commisar with the Commander or not in other companies, it's probably more of a matter of taste than one being better than the other.

As to general placement you'll definitely want a Commissar with your BTS. Probably in all your companies (possibly apart from foot infantry companies if you take any). Commissars in single Superheavies is a good one too - if it breaks and rallies it gets rid of all it's blast markers as it rallies. Rough Riders or artillery are a good choice after that.
