Had a game a few days ago.

A question came up. A formation goes on overwatch turn 1 and remains on overwatch to turn 2. Is it allowed to activate on turn two just to go to overwatch again? (Was used to "stall" activations to force me to commit forward).

We couldn't find it handled in the overwatch rules or the FAQ so we allowed it.

I think it is probably allowed since you either use up overwatch or do a different order. Even if the new order just happen be another overwatch. The risk is similar for failing an activation and being forced to hold order. -losing overwatch in the meantime-

Yes. Staying on OW was a concept introduced in the 2008 revisions, where a formation that was on OW and had not used it could go into the next turn on OW. In the next turn, the formation may attempt to activate to stay on OW, but if it fails the activation the formation then performs a "Hold" activation.

Note that Aircraft on CAP is slightly different in that the formation may carry CAP over to the following turn but may *not* choose another action in that turn (the argument being that they need to return to base to change their weaponry for a different mission).

Ok thanks guys then we played it correctly! Seemed probably right as the player would otherwise be down one activation.

BTW a second question. Is this also true then for a formation that starts the game on overwatch (from garrison). Could they also do the same?

Yup... it's a typical 'stalling' activation often performed by pesky Eldar rangers and the like....

Yeah, my gunz mobz do it all the time!

Interstingly I seem to recall if the 'stalling' overwatchee's are the last formation that you acitivate then they automatically pass the activation test?

The point is that if the player has no further activations and elects to "pass" (retaining the formation on OW) then he has effectively ended his turn.

Cheers Ginger; didn't think there was a specific rule but that's the situation I'm discussing. I presume it's legal to declare a 'pass' and therefore end your turn? Can you do that at any point? For example if you had more than 1 activation (say 3 or 4 even) on overwatch like what may be the case with an army like siegers?

Section 1.6 states you can't elect to past, and all unbroken units must make an activation test, meaning ow units would need to roll as would any units as they might fail and gain a bm

Agreed Jon - except that the ERC decided to permit "Passing" where the only remaining formations are Broken or on OW, to allow a formation on OW to avoid taking the test and failing. Hence the FAQ:-
Quote:
Q: Can a unit remain on Overwatch into a following turn?
A: If the Formation hasn't fired by the end of the turn, then they can remain on Overwatch into the following turn.
