Post subject:  new (old) players getting back into epic advice needed

hi all, great forum and info. we are a wargaming group based in Dublin Ireland www.warheads.ie

ive managed to pick up some epic armies from a variety of sources a mini titan legion, heaps of space marines and a few orcs/eldar plus a couple of boxes of squats which will probably end up on ebay.

some of my fellow gamers also have epic armies and others are interested in getting a game in,

we have a 2v2 game and should have a 1v1 game pretty much sorted. below is the resources i have gotten together we are saying 2500 per side for the 2v2 game.

i am posting as this is the first game for many and we want to keep things simple, we dont want to have a game that runs alll night so a 3-4 hour game max. we want simple easy to use rules and if possible to be able to use army cards - the old school types - v handy.

what does everyone think about the links etc below - is it ok or is there anything else we should use. - the theme is keep it simple ! ;D so all the epic models say out for another game and dont get sent into storage

rules we are using

army builder

army cards

thanks all

The links are mostly good but there is a newer more up to date version of the rules, which we as a community try to update yearly or at least every second year, to include more lists that have been approved.

For the most updated version I refer to the following site:

http://www.net-armageddon.org/

On that page there's a link to two documents

1) the tournament pack (rules + approved (only) lists)

2) the army list compendium with all the list the netEA* community works on (devided into experimental, developmental and approved).
*(net-Epic Armageddon or 4th ed epic = the most rescent edition)

The first link to army cards seems to be for netEA compatible cards. [Edit] but you really don't need them when you have the traitor legion army list builder app [/Edit]

The 2nd link to army cards are for another version of epic though, called net epic. It's quite different from Epic Armageddon (4ed epic). net epic is a community driven development of the epic Space Marine (2nd ed epic) that started way back when GW released epic 40k (3rd ed epic) which was not much loved by the players..

Welcome to the forum! Good to hear you're getting into GW's best game :)

As Borka said the rules you've linked to are outdated you should use the current ones, direct link here if it helps - http://www.net-armageddon.org/sites/def ... -08-07.pdf

You can fit a 3k game in 3 hours easy once you know what you're doing.

Army cards aren't used in the current version of epic which the considerable majority of people play, the ones you've found don't relate to it, just do without them. People here are friendly at helpful at helping new people with what's good to take and tactics to use.

yeah that looks pretty good, I believe there are quick reference sheets in the E:A rulebook which I *think* is still available on the GW site

Yes and yes. There's also a quick ref in the TP. It's in Section 5.

hi all,

one last thing, the net epic rules are pretty comprehensive, is there a more condensed version? i have the quick reference sheet which is great. but a dumbed down ruleset for beginners would be really handy, i dont want to overload people in the first sitting, is there anything like at in exisitance? maybe someones homemade mini ruleset?

thanks

John

Agreed Hena. The usual advice is to play the scenarios at the end of each section in the rulebook in order to familiarize yourself with the basic concepts. So work through Activation, Movement, and especially Assaults and Shooting (including suppression, cross-fire and cover). Then try games with 1K 'standard' forces with ~ 4 formations each side.

Once happy with these (which takes a few quick games), then consider including War Engines, and then finally consider using aircraft and spacecraft.

Not as far as I know, though not a bad thought.
I think this has been suggested a few times, but not been done mainly because of the preparation and work required to keep it clear and concise.

cool, just thought id ask its not easy doing a video.

i am coming from palyign flames of war which are great for quick start guides, intro ruleset videos so i am pretty spoilt in that regard ;D
i would use www.easyarmy.com alot its available in both flames of war and bolt action flavours.
it gives you army lists and a selector for your armies plus unit stats
it then lets you generate a printable PDF giving:
army unit list
army stats list
special rule list
a pick list so you dont forget anything.

im going to try to my own dumbed down version of an army list like this as its extremley handy to have during a game.

- yet another noob question, im painting up a dark angel army atm, have found some great painting guides the units are all on bases - the problem is i need to get suitable basing material. ideally id liek to have a choice between a really fine flock grass or better yet a sandy rubble material what is normally used as my grass etc at home is for bigger models and would not look right?
