Hi,

I'm a new player (Orks) and have only recently purchased an army. I now need to look at getting some nice tokens to use during games. Assuming games will be in the 2-5k points range, what should I look to get?

I'm thinking I'll need blast markers and something else to represent 3 or 5 blast markers in case they pile up on a big unit. I'll probably need something for when a unit is broken? What else? Should I mark whenever a unit has done an action that turn to save confusion in big fights? Do I need to know when a unit has marched and/or other commands?

I do 1 and 5 for BMs, I've seen 2 and 3 as well. I made my own with GIMP, a 1/2" hole punch and small red poker chips from Koplow Games:

For other markers something for activated, broken, overwatch and march would be a good idea, yes. Maybe something to mark units that have a crit (gargant fires, tiran core breaches) or that slow fired. I used green poker chips for most of those.

There's also a few companies that make acrylic tokens or 3d effects. Litko's one, before you buy direct from them check eBay though, there's discounts and cheaper shipping.

I have oodles of red dice so I put those down next to each formation.
in a similar spirit I use white for rolling normal attacks and my blue for mw and green for tk.

As orks I'd say you'll want a fair fee blast markers, maybe even 30, but you can get away with far fewer if you use two different types for say 1 and 3. If you're a modeller, there's some great inspiration around here for nice looking ones.

Next most numerous is something to mark activations, more for your opponent's sake than yours but I am lazy and usually forget. Most people just use glass beads or similar. You could use order dice for these as well as marched, broken etc but they are expensive I guess, and actually can be annoying to find the right side. The advantage is if you have 1 per activation you don't need to take any other markers,

You'll need a fair few broken markers (unfortunately!).

Everything else that might need marking is fairly rare so just having anything generic to help you remember there was something requiring attention will be fine.

Little dice for damage capacity and shields are useful.

Blast markers are a blast and something that sets epic apart from most other games. Dice may be more practical, but tehy look about as exciting as an excelsheet. Bigger size makers "worth" 3-5 small ones are a definite must. I got some nice lasercut transparent plastic markers from litko. Not the cheapest, but hey, they are going to be an important visual component in all battles you fight, regardless of army used.

I play in the same gaming group as Dave, and I also use the mini poker chips fom koplow. 99% of our games are 3000 points so that's where I'm coming from.

I use red poker chips for blast markers - marked '1' one one side and '2' on the other, and I have 26 chips. I play SM so I have the potential of having to place a lot of BM on a unit before it breaks, but I have never run out of markers.

I use blue chips for unit activations, one side represents inactivated and the other represents activated. And I use black markers for broken/overwatch. Only need enough to have one of each for each formation on the board - usually 9-11

That has always been enough.

I use simple blast markers - papier mache craters on pennies for BMs, broken cogs for DC damage, blue explosions for bust void shields.

Overwatch and Broken are flip sides of the same poker disc size token - I don't track activated or marched formations (perhaps I should?)

One very effective solution I've seen are glass beads - yellow for BM, blue for void shields. Anything that stands out on a table so you don't loose them!

My shifting projects

I use pony beads in various colors: Red for DC, Blue for Voids, and what was called a "Smoke Mix" - blacks, greys, whites, and clears - for BMs. I keep something like 40 blasts, 15 DCs and a handful of Voids on hand, but I have a few hundred of each. I think they cost me ten bucks all told.

I use the Epic/BFG order dice for marking activations/marched/broken.

I also think that Blast Markers should be as visual as possible and if you don't mind opting for a premium version then have a look at Litko! They are the sh*t!

I personally use their micro version for singles and the large ones for '5s'! *mediums will do fine as well
Got 20 micro and 6 large for my Death Korps horde list and haven't had issues so far.

The guys in my local scene have set the bar quite high for lots of stuff! I'm still working on finishing off my objective markers but I think the Litko option is the way to go. I saw some resin ones on ebay but they didn't quite seem right ...
