The latest rumour on Faeit 212 has Epic returning next year:

Take it with a grain of salt, but interesting!

Eh. Doesn't really sound like an interesting format. But then I'm a gloomy SOB right now.

It's on Faeit, so I wouldn't take it too seriously, their rumours turn out to be false the majority of the time,.

I would hate to see a re-release like that though, I hope they just leave epic as is in the hands of the fans.

I would be extremely surprised. This is the first that I have heard (although I am certainly not as connected now as I was), but it seems pretty soon after tanking the entire line to have to start resculpting and casting a whole new set of minis!

Epic Armegeddon To Return in 2014 and More on Specialist Games
[Faeit 212]

Epic 40k was and is a game that many of us have found memories of playing and loving. Its been years since I have heard of a game of Epic played, and it is one of those game that would be a ton of fun if it returned with support. Today's rumors tackle Epic, giving it a possible release date of July-August of next year.

Now if these specialists games are coming back, my long time favorite would also possibly see a return... Battlefleet Gothic. I would be all over that.

via Tim the Thief:

GW will bring back Specialist Games gradually with beginning in the 3th Quarter 2014.
-First Game will be Epic in July or August 2014
-There will be no individual model Boxes or Blister, only Game Sets and possibly "Expansions"
-Sets remain permanent in assortment
-Epic Game Set might feature Space Marines vs. Orks, there will be Sets for Imperial Guard, Eldar and Chaos

No individual model boxes or blisters? That release plan sounds kind of weird. Sounds like it means you play with fixed armies and no room for customisation?

this doesn't make much sense, personally, for a tactical and strategic game, provide some box per army, full of a predefined set of miniatures, unless the ruleset aren't parallel restrictive in the army list develop, which goes in the opposite direction of the current structure (and style) of the game. If not, if you want one more det. you must buy all the rest. Really strange (?). It reminds me the philosophy of the vintage blisters with two models inside (epic 40k 2nd ed.) when the related detachment consisted of three models. (buying 3 bli$ter$, it all add$ up). GW...

I'll believe it when I see it.

With that said, no boxes or blisters does fit with their new strategy. First, moving to plastics, you have to do it that way due to economies of scale. Second, they do one-off games as limited editions. They release a game with the understanding that it's a one off (an improvement over the early 2000's when they'd make lavish promises of support and then cut a game off before it had even hit the shelves). Third, they want players focused on large collections of 40k models, not playing many games with many collections where they might be tempted to try other manufacturers or game systems.

If they do try an epic release (and again, I'm skeptical), it will be like Space Hulk or the naval game-- a fun one off with nice models that has a few gems that find their way into our collections but otherwise doesn't make much of an impact on the hobby.

I'd be very surprised if they tried to re-enter and stick with a game in 6mm.

That is what I am thinking. Self contained game.
Though easier to do with Bloodbowl, Mordhiem or Necro where the gangs/teams have relatively similar numbers and armaments. But those games don't feed people into the wider 40k universe.

Honestly? The longer GW leave the EpicA rules well alone the better!

Just adding my 0,02$ here...

I think it makes sense for GW to enter the 6-10 mm. scene again as well as other specialist games. Esp. with larger plastic sets containing more than just a unit.
I don't think GW likes to support Epic or Warmaster. But I think they begin to realize how much the epic scale wargaming is growing now and that they have left a vacuum.

Fringe games can bring people into the gaming hobby and if GW doesn't provide fringe games then people playing competitors games may start other 28 mm wargames. GW realizes this and that's why they want to do it again. GW has no love for the Epic community, but they they care about market share.

I think eventually both Epic, Warmaster, Blood Bowl and skirmishing games will return, in plastic, as box sets. GW creates plastic sets better than most and they will bank on this. I think the large epic range is a hindrance the way it has been with hundreds of models to support in blisters, but if retooled to nice plastic sets with multiple unit types in each, I can see how they can bring it back.
The danger for them is that it will detract from 40k and Apocalypse, but they also know that if they don't do this others will. Look at Dropzone Commander and the many others providing quality models and rules.
And I for one am not interested the least bit in 40k Apocalypse. For me the true scale of 40k is EPIC! So players like me will be catered to and kept in the GW family by providing new rules and miniatures.

As a player I fear the most they will release it with thrash rules and further divide the epic community already entrenched in various systems. But I more than welcome more and new models and units, not the least if they can release Epic models for all the cool new 40k models.
Oh and if Tau returns as a plastic Epic army I will be there with my wallet!

It's going to be interesting to follow! :-)

I just can't see it happening, beyond maybe either:
- a scenario fight with a handful of unit types, or,
- a few titans, i.e. Adeptus Titanicus rather than Epic Armageddon

To do two even modestly sized armies in plastic or finecast is still way more moulds than they have done with their previous box sets.

I just hope it happens. I would gladly get the boxes of high quality minis and use them in my games. I really don't need support for them because all the support I need comes from the community. What I can use, is the new nice minis. It would be nice extra

The one thing I fear though is that GW changes the scale to undermine existing miniature owners. That would be the BS move that finally remove me from GW altogether..
