Apologies for my delayed response here, spotty WiFi connections have taken their toll on my internet ability while traveling.

Oh, point of clarification - if one creates a new army for the game, does your opponent need the files as well?

In theory, it should use the units of whoever is hosting the game and the client should automatically download the required assets. In practice, I've not tested it.

One of my goals for when I get back is to make adding new units easier and more modular so they can be shared and plugged in more easily.

Perhaps send it round to the others who mentioned being interested earlier in the thread if you haven't already?

For now I'm only going to hand out to those who ask.

If two different people add an army does one of them need to combine the work into the installation to use them both? I'd like to try making some armies (not 3d ones for simplicities sake, I'll leave that to others), did you draw the sprites or find them online somewhere?

As mentioned above, it'll use the files held on the host of the game's PC. The sprites were mostly grabbed from various vassal packages though heavily edited in some cases. Yay, double infringement.

Do the bases have to be round or is it possible for rectangular and square ones to be created?

Square is totally possible or any shape really. I went with circle because it makes measuring distances easier; rotation doesn't affect where the furthest point is, so measuring from the centre is always accurate. With square, or worse, rectangular bases players could gain extra movement by rotation, as all distances are displayed from centre to centre.

If people are OK with that issue, I can make template bases in other shapes when I get back.

I'm hoping to use it for a campaign that MagnusIlluminus is running pretty soon. I passed the link on to him - I hope that's ok?

I'm going to put together some tau graphics this weekend if I get a chance.

Yeah, I'm OK with the link being passed around, as long as it doesn't get posted publicly.

Don't start from scratch! All the Tau units (and all the other races) have excellent sprites from 40k players playing and modding Vassal. Re-use the existing excellent sprites. I'm not sure of the best method to get the image files seperately out of the Vassal files, but I was resorting to print screen then cropping around each figure and pasting onto a base (5 per base for infantry).

There's a good forum for 40k Vassal with various downloads for mods here. Image

Nice one Glyn, I knew about this but had forgotten! I'll see I can do.

We need one of these CAD dudes to get on the case really! I'd love to at least see what a 3d sprite looks like in this...

For anyone who's interested you can access the images in a vassal mod by editing the file name of the mod file to end .zip. From there you can open it like any other zip file - there'll be an images folder inside...

Square/rectangular bases would be good by the way - one guy had his tau on 40x30's recently and they look pretty sweet. No big deal if that's awkward though...

Completely fine from a modelling point of view, but potentially an issue for in game measuring. I'll put different base shapes on my todo list for when I get back (mid august)
