Hey guys!

I was browsing kickstarter.com the other day and stumbled on the Fumbbl dice project! http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/179 ... e?ref=live

Could this be done for Epic as well? How did the Fumbbl guys avoid IP issues with their dice?

I guess, by designing their own icons.
As if GW holds a copyright for skulls and arrows though :P

Would definitely back a order dice kickstarter :)

At $20 for 3 dice, I think most people would just buy the GW ones, no?

yeah for sure, it should be atleast half the price of GW ones to be worth the trouble.

hell a borrowed button maker and a decent printer and you got a better replacement than the dice (sides of which don't event apply to EA such as Come To New Heading from BFG). Too lazy for that you can nab stuff from ebay

The GW ones are D6. There are eight possible Epic orders. I find it a bit inconvenient on that basis. :P

I don't know how much custom dice cost. Q-Workshop's seem to run 140USD for 20 completely custom D6s. That seems a bit higher than I'm really eager to pay. With Chessex it'd be 6 bucks per die for a small run (less than 25) up to about 2.50 per dice for a large run (500+ dice). And all those are for D6s - I don't know if you can even get custom engraved D8s.

Chessex has a variety of colors of blank D8 for $0.50 each. $30 and you have enough order dice to last you 'til you die (in an exciting variety of colors, at that!). And Paizo has white for fifty cents less per ten than Chessex, if you're the uncomplicated sort.

I seem to recall the GW order dice are based on Epic 40K special orders, with BFG "borrowing" them:
Overwatch: target symbol
Assault: arrow with flame at the point
Broken: arrows pointing in different directions
Special (flak, something else?): exclamation
March: three chevrons
Repair?: cog with lightning

Personally I don't think dice are the best way to represent orders in epic anyway, you only really need broken, overwatch, march and counters would be better. You can use another side to mean "activated" but I find it too slow finding a particular side. Markers/beads are much better. Then there are per-unit effects like slow firing, criticals which you can use one if the sides for but also would be better as counters.

I do see a use with dice. But maybe counters is better.

So maybee a project with BM counters and order markers could be interesting?

You mean, something like these?
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catal ... od1050012a

The thing is that with alternating activations, there isnt really a need for order dice, because the order is declared and then executed right away, and what order a formation was on doesnt really matter aside from overwatch.

That said... I have become a Kickstarter junkie, have backed too many projects and would probably still buy them anyway.

While not 'predicting' the order, markers or dice are often needed to mark what a formation did, or even that it has activated. I nearly always need to use markers for 'Broken', 'OW', 'marched', 'activated',

Other potential markers for 'doubled' (activated), 'CAP' (OW) and 'landed' - though it is relatively easy to remember these details.

Personally I think I prefer dice to markers or coloured counters purely because it is easier to find the required dice face than scrabbling for a marker. And cubes seem the ideal answer given the number of different conditions to be marked.

Even in a 3K game, it is possible to have 20+ formations per side and usual (in the UK) to have 12-14 formations, or between 2-4 GW dice packs.

Now, if you could produce a pack of resin cubes with suitable symbols for a quarter of Grandma Wendy's packs . . . .

That said, blank dice, some imagination and paint or India ink will also suffice
;)

I made these 8 years ago.

I was trying to come up with simple graphic icons that readily conveyed the order given.

11 is Marshall, 12 and 13 are Rally, 14 and 15 are engage, 16 is broken, 19 is Overwatch, 22 is sustain fire, 24 and 25 could also be sustain fire (or blast markers, I suppose), 26 is Hold, 28-30 is Ground Attack for aircraft, 31-33 is Intercept, 51 is Advance, 52 is Double, 52-but-really-53 is March, and 54 is Engage.

Yes?

A wrote a simple app for tracking orders and weapons for BFG. It'd probably be trivial to port it to EA as the complexity is zilch in comparison. Any use or interest?

Currently runs in Windows 8 touch platforms but is pretty easy to port to mono to support iOS and Mac.

Yes, i think theese are the essential ones.

And as i said before, the idea was to do a cheaper version of the current ones. I also think dice is the better choice then markers to save time. But what to put on the 2 last sides then if we would agree that the 4 above are the essential ones?
