There's really no right or wrong way to do command stands. Anything to make them stand out is pretty kosher.
For instance, my last formation (done with EW guild centuria) doesn't really have commanders so I stuck a robot on one slot and spent some extra time with some gold details. Don't stress it too much and have fun with it.

Okay, but "traditionally" it's one commander, one commissar, one coms. expert, one standard, and one pyscher?

PS, thanks for the link, some good looking stuff there! :)

Well traditionally it was a flag pole stuck into the slot on the square base but yes, you're correct ;)
That being said I'd be cautious with my commissar and psykers as the are actual characters you pay for and affect game play (as opposed to tech priests, apocatharies, tech mariend, etc). Of course the first commisar goes with the SC so fair enough there. If can get ahold of the old 3rd edition vox trooper and or 2nd edition banner guy they go great in those stands as well.

You're using the E40k plastic sprues it sounds like. I'd go with at least a commander and 4 infantrymen. You can put an autocannon/missile launcher on there too to be WYSIWYG. Commissars can be put anywhere in the army for the most part, so that's up to you. Either model him on there or use magnets or something to move him where you like. After that anything else (Comms, Psyker, etc) is personal preference.

Are you planning on bringing these to NEAT?

Also, the first Commissar just goes in the Regimental HQ formation, not on the SC stand itself. That's up to you.

I have the metal command upgrade that is currently offered as well as the plastic guys.

So what I have set aside currently is: Commander, coms, standard, ogryn (the mean mother with the gas mask) and a commissar. So it sounds like the first 4 guy are just for show, but the commissar would actually be an upgrade to the unit? Also I have no clue what SC means, and lastly I would love to go to NEAT but I really want to get my head around this game before I commit, is it 2K points?

Yes, I used all 3 packs, the original IG, the E40K IG and the Metal Epic: A IG Pack. If you look closely thru all my IG pics, you'll see a mix. With the Metal Epic IG pack, I'd generally have a Commander, Radio man, Standard barer, or Asst. Commander, maybe a Psyker or Ogryn Bodyguard or just another trooper or two ... I've even used the standard Commissar figure as another officer on the stand by painting him up to match the standard uniform of the unit. Image Image Image

Comms, psykers, etc, don't have any bearing on the EA version of Epic. For the IG, the only characters you'll have to worry about are the Commanders and the Commissars.

Here's how it works:
Regimental HQ- Thirteen stands, one containing the Supreme Commander, one containing the Commissar. The additional eleven stands are straight Infantry.
Infantry Coy.-Thirteen stands, one containing the Coy. Commander, one containing the Commissar. The additional eleven stands are straight Infantry.
Other Coys.-Designate a model as the Commissar's vehicle - flag, paint, etc.

As Dave stated, you can spice up every other Infantry stand with a Heavy Weapon to keep things fluffy, but you're not required to do so.

With the Comms., Psykers, etc models, you can intersperse them throughout your stands, or just put them on a Command Stand to represent Imperial Command. My Command stand usually looks like a Commander, an Ogryn bodyguard, a Psyker, a Comms guy, and a Standard. The Commissar stand just replaces a standard troop stand trooper with a Commissar. If you use Commissars (and I don't see why you wouldn't) the first one has to go in your Regimental HQ formation. Other Commissars can go in any formations you want.

Commissars are only going to appear in your companies, not in your Support Formations, Imperial Navy, or Titan formations. We usually play with one per Company, but tournaments may limit that to a 2D6 roll (like in the rulebook) or a set amount (Adepticon limits you to 6 Commissars total.) EDIT: I didn't see anything about Commissars NOT appearing in Support Formations, so I guess that's legal if you want to do it. You can't attach them to your Coy. Upgrade Units though - 1 Commissar per formation.

The setup took me a while to get down, as well, so don't sweat it.

As for NEAT and the rest of our games, we play with 3000 points. And don't worry about the rules - like I told you, I'm terrible with them as well. But that's what we have Dave at our games for! Anytime you want to try to get a game in, let me know - give me a little advance warning so I can get a table together. Any additional games under my belt are always helpful!

NOTE: I edited this post to fix some misinformation.

The Regimental HQ and Infantry companies are actually thirteen stands, 1 commander (or SC) and 12 infantry.

Haha - I have no clue why I wrote fourteen. I was looking right at my stands when I did that. So much for my properly informing TheDean! ::)

Yes, the NetEA rules are the ones we most commonly use in the US.
