Post subject:  Why are there (at least) three different rule and army lists

Hello all!

I am a new member here on the forums and I find it somewhat confusing with different variants of rules and army lists circulating around here. There seems to be at least three popular variants from what I can see.

- Epic Armageddon Compendium
- Net-Armageddon
- EUK-Armageddon

The rules seem to be very similar but the army lists differ a lot from each other. Is any of these more widely used than other variants? So far in our home games we have just used the official GW rules and army sets.

Firstly there are two main rulesets, epic:armageddon and NetEpic, E:A is the most recent ruleset from GW, NetEpic is a development of the old Space Marine/Titan Legions ruleset developed by people who preferred that version of the game

There are three main sets of army lists for E:A, NetEA which is a continuation of the development GW were doing, EUK which is a streamlined version of NetEA lists (for the most part) intended for balanced tournament play in the UK, finally there is Epic-FR which are lists developed and used by the substantial epic community in France

All 3 use the epic armageddon rulebook available from GW, they just have varying stats for armies, and in some cases different rule interpretations

and also all 3 are broadly compatible, so an epic-FR list could have a perfectly fun game against an EUK list for example....

You might want to choose based on where you're located, if you're in france then Epic-FR is your best bet, if you're in the UK and plan to be a tournament regular, perhaps EUK, otherwise NetEA is the most widely used set of lists, probably worth starting there

Thanks for the answer. I am in Sweden and I think they are using the Epic Armageddon Compendium 2.0 for tournaments here. I guess its a translation of the French project.

Whats confusing is how the three variants have very different approach how to build and play some armies (for exemple tyranids).

AFAIK the compendium is the NetEA project lists which are worldwide, I think the french lists are the most divergent from the other two, they seem to have quite a different meta over there so their lists are often balanced in unexpected ways

OK, thanks for the clarification. I have another question then. In the compendium there are army lists for many factions. Have they been replaced by new lists posted at http://www.net-armageddon.org/ ?

you will find that the lkinks to the army lists link back to Taccoms

Yes, the army lists at the net-armageddon.org link back to the Taccom pages. But the army lists in the Compendium are (in some cases) completely different from the current ones at Taccom.

I would say because development has continued (death guard as an example)

The compendium lists are stable lists.
The lists on tac command are often having changes tested, so are sometimes different
Every year the test lists are evaluated to see if they're good enough to join the compendium as the new stable list version.

^^^ What he said. ^^^

The Compendium lists and the lists here are the same. There was a feeling that the lists here are in a state of flux and development, and so new players were finding it difficult to work out what was balanced or the latest version. The Compendium is aimed at the more casual player and represents the stable version at the point of publication.

Lists here are more 'up to date' but new elements might result in unbalancing factors, which wont be discovered until they are played significantly.

Once a year (approximately) there is an update of the Compendium to bring it in line with stable current versions. Its an effort to make the game easier to get into by providing everything that you need easily without throwing a thousand different footnotes at you.

It has been very confusing, so I empathise with the question you've posed in your opening post.

Suffice to say that the easiest options are just to use the army lists which have been published in the Compendium referred to above, or to stick to the GW core rules and FAQ, whichever is best for your circumstances.

Keep asking questions if you run into any further difficulties, because things still aren't always as clear to new comers as they are to those who have been involved with list development for years.

You might be talking about the old Compendium. That was a document published in 2008 or so I think? When I was at Gothcon in april they were using the old Compendium, but when I pointed out to them that NetEA had published a new 2012 compendium they were happy to change. Not sure what they're currently using.

Just be aware that there are different NetEA compendiums out there...the 2012 Compendium contains newer versions of the lists from the Compendium 2.0 (if I'm thinking of the correct document), and some of the rule changes have also been rolled back.

The 2008 Compendium is, I think, pretty widespread in groups that don't want to be bothered with tracking constant rules updates. Most would probably be happy to switch to the newer NetEA compendiums if it's pointed out to them, as we now have a website and everything.

I used to use the old 2008 compendium, but I stopped once it became clear that there was finally going to be an updated version of the official lists consolidated into one place, and because the 2008 version had some questionable rule changes which had not been approved by the majority in a few cases.
