Something turned up in one of our recent games: The rules on hit allocation on WEs state that the opponent must state which of his attacks aim at the WEs and which aim at the other units, when allocating hits on a mixed formation. Until now we never used this rule in assaults, but the RAW don't make a difference. Can someone state that his hits will not target a Gorgon in an assault against a DKoK infantry company for example? |

I would say no. First off, it would feel gamey to me. You're right that Section 3.2.1 doesn't specifically state it happens in shooting only, but if you allow 'called shots' as a general rule you potentially end up with funky situations like units in CC with a WE hitting something else instead. You could make an argument for FF doing so, but frankly Engages are likely to be so fluid you would take the shots you had. Also, KISS. |

I think section 3.2 refers to shooting, not assaults (which is 3.3). |

To emphasize what Ginger said, (quoting 3.2) "The following special rules apply when shooting either at or with war engines. In general, war engines are treated in the same manner as armoured vehicle targets (i.e., any hit that would affect an armoured vehicle can affect a war engine). Any exceptions to this are noted below." This is what makes Gorgons scary. You use them to soak up hits from your squishy infantry. /Fredmans |

Yup, 3.2 and 3.3 are for different situations. In an engagement, both players roll all the appropriate dice (CC and FF, normal and MW (and TK) attacks) and total up the number of hits. The opponent then allocates these hits as they see fit (whilst obeying the rules for hit allocation in 1.9.6), normal hits first and then MW (and TK) second. This is where Gorgons are fantastic if they can get into an advatageous position. So basically, if a Gorgon is in base contact with an enemy in an engagement, it can always be selected to take the first 3 hits that are placed (even if other DKoK infantry are in base contact as well). One thing to note is that Gorgons (or any war engines for that matter) cannot barge on top of friendly units to get to the front of an engagment. There must either be a clear lane for them to move between friendly units or they must be able to move clearly over friendly units (not easy with a 5cm countercharge). Check THIS THREAD for more details on War Engines and barging. |

Thank you. I knew I was using the right conclusion, but I wasn't sure on how I got there... ![]() |
