Looking around at other armies i see a range of bases used.

What is everyones preference or reason for choosing the bases they do?

I think i prefer the rectangular bases. I like how it staggers the infantry giving an almost natural unregimented look.

Not sure i particularly like the square bases.

I've seen a lot of people using round bases, but it looks odd to me with other bases having straight edges. Although, titans come on round bases..... so i don't know.

And is there any benefits or disadvantages to each?

none at all! it all comes down to personal preference, some people like the regimented look of the strip bases, some prefer the slightly more chaotic feel of a round base.

I used 2p pieces for my guard as they are cheaper than GW bases, and I wanted each base to be a 'mini diorama' of sorts

I'm off to buy some large penny washers to put my tanks on today, my whole army will be based on round bases eventually :)

I saw your guard, they looked really good. (do you have a link for where they are from)

What size are the Carnifex etc? As I've seen those on round bases that look very much like 40K bases? Are they that big?

I thought the thickness of those bases was off though.

Do you find the paint on the 1p coins etc chips though?

Carnifexes aren't huge IIRC and would be fine on a 25mm round base, so they would be fine on a 40k GW base or a 2p piece if you're concerned about thickness or price

I've not had any trouble with the paint on the coins, I did two sprays of black primer to be sure, and when I get the rest of my infantry (and indeed army) painted up, it will all be getting a liberal spray of matt varnish to help protect them

I guess the good thing about coins, is the weight helps keep it in place and the right way up.

I'll have an experiment i think when I get some stuff arrive. Thanks for the idea.

I like the long 40mm bases- for the same reason- the irregular pattern of wholes- makes a unit look more natural rather than being formed up in parade formation.

I like the idea of round bases but currently they are only available with regular pattern of wholes- which puts me off. If someone did round bases with irregular pattern of wholes I would be most interested.

There are some advantages to certain base types in certain circumstances, but they're relatively inconsequential.

Bases with a longer edge can be turned to give maximum frontage to a unit particularly a Scout unit. For instance 40x12 (strip) bases gain 2cm of frontage per stand compared to the older 20x20 (square) bases. This is a full 8cm increase in frontage in a Space Marine Scout formation. Depending on how you play locally, they also have a longer effective dismount because the far edge of the stand can be further from the vehicle while still keeping a model within 5cm of the transport. Note that there are some areas that play entirely within 5cm, and this advantage is lost in those areas.

Bases with a shorter edge can contact an enemy unit with more stands, increasing the density of attacks in a similar way to Warmaster cavalry. This can make a difference to CC units.

Thus the 40x12 bases have some advantages over the older square bases, but they are not many and only occur in limited circimstances. It's best to choose bases for aesthetics or availability than for any tactical advantage. I use strip bases, but I do so largely because I have so many. I'm finally having to consider what will happen when I run out after using about 70 on my Vanaheim and giving 80 to a friend.

I use a variety of different base styles, i just try not to go over the 40mm side rule. I'll post some examples of armies and base's i've used.

Smaller base is 25mm, x32 for $4 purchased from ebay, larger is 30mm, x12 for $5 these are warmachine bases. I really like the edge on these bases.

larger base is 40mmX20mm, x50 from baccus for like 5 bucks. smaller is a standard square epic base.

More 40mmX20mm baccus, also 30mmX30mm baccus for the juggars.

Metal washers 5/16" <22mm>, after using them on this army i find that they are to expensive for so few. Also if you drop one on the floor you'll cause more damage because of the weight of the metal, both a turn off.

American penny here 19mm, looked really good on this item would use again.

Basically i use a variety of items, and i don't choose them for an upper hand. I mostly choose them for a different feel, round bases give a swarm effect, the bigger 40mmX20mm bases allow me to add more to the base for looks. It all comes down to what you prefer in the end.

Strips so far for everything but the next project I'm using FOW small bases purely for aesthetics (they will allow me to use less than 5 models per base without it looking too goofy, additionally it allows me a little more room to play with and get a bit more creative with base decorations/detailing)

I'd just go with whatever you like the look of the most.

thanks for the examples. I think i'll stick with the strips for my infantry. I like the way the holes are in random places to give a more natural layout to the individual troops (especially as I'm doing Tyranids)

But I really like the look of those curved edge round bases. Warmachine did you say? I've got a few warmachine figures, but dont remember the bases that small. I'll try them out thanks. Can you get the bases direct/on ebay?

I dont know why, but I dont like the washer/penny base.

I used green stuff on the washer after plugging the hole and then pressed the mini into it.

The smaller bases are no warmachine but they are from a guy that makes them himself from www.proxiemodels.com
He has a pretty nice 15mm gothic building for $4 aswell might be something to look into.

FWIW, there have been some hexagonal bases posted on these forums which do give 'mob' oriented lists a nice look and feel (esp Tyranids), though I don't know who sells them.

GF9 makes 3mm MDF hex bases. 25 or 30mm across, I think.
