Hi,

when a formation elects to countercharge, it has to charge the closest enemy unit.

handbook 1.12.4.:

Counter charging units are allowed to counter charge
enemy units from any enemy formation, not just the one
they were assaulted by. Any enemy formations that are
contacted by counter charging units are drawn into the
assault, and will fight just as if they had made the assault
themselves.

The "contacted" means that a base of this formation is contacted? Or is it sufficient to get into FF range?

Yep.

Grrr! My least favourite rule in the game. Ambiguously written and poorly designed. The above paragraph outlines the issue well. One part says has to charge "nearest enemy" the other says "any enemy formation," so therefore contradictory as well.

I would tend to interpret "any enemy formation" as a clarification to "closest enemy", and not a contradiction.

What's ambiguous?

First you charge the nearest enemy. It doesn't have to be the guys who charged you. Whoever you contact (if that includes other formations) becomes part of the assault.
