Says that the number of units that may be in close combat with a WE equals double the DC. So, what is allowed as far as placement of the attackers? Must the attacker first surround the WE before units start a "second row", or can the attackers be placed with their sides, instead if their fronts, touching the WE? Or, would the attacker just be allowed to have as many rows as needed to get enough attackers (6 in the case of baneblades) with only the first unit/row in base-to-base assuming the other 5 behind the first are in base-to-base as well.

You have to physically be touching in order to be base to base. However, orientation is unimportant, so you can just touch with the short sides. It's one of the few ways basing can have an effect on actual gameplay. Not a large effect in general, but there.

No once you have one unit in base to base it removes the units zone of control. So you can move straight onto the next unit.

I don't think what's being asked. He's asking about how you would get 2xDC attackers in BtB in the first place, not about how many you need before you move on to the next victim.

What if you have round bases?

Is it fair that tactical strategy suffers for artistic expression?

I really don't think the effect is that large. It exists, or edge on combats against WE would be seen less often, but in the grand scheme of things, it's small enough to be negligable.

Hmm, well as SG says, most play that you need to get bases physically into B-B. However the larger titans and some of the more esoteric models and bases can make this difficult to impossible; Epic-UK have introduced stats for the mega-gargant at 16DC, and I defy anyone to get all 32 units of an assaulting formation into B-B with the beast (not that you would really want to :)).

If in doubt, you can always discuss this in the 5 min warm up and come to some agreement on how such assaults will be arranged, including measurement, moving to contact and banking up in ranks etc.

Only regular models lose their ZOC when contacted by one unit. A WE loses it when contacted by as many models as it has DC.
