Hi All I notice people talking about clipping attacks and how artillery are usefull in pushing the opponent into setting up his formations for clipping attacks. I wonder if anyone can clarify and expand. Thanks |

Clipping is maximizing your number of to-hit rolls in an assault while minimizing those of your opponents. Artillery causes your opponent to spread a formation out more to minimize the number of units hit by it. This makes it easier for you to clip though, as the spread out enemy can't bring all it's FF into the assault as it's too far away even with a counter charge. |

think of it as a flank attack. if the opponent is spread out, the line is weaker, and its easier to hit them from a postition where less of his formation can participate in the ensuing firefight. this greatly increases the chance that you will cause more casualties than him, allowing you to win the assault more reliably. artillery and other barrage point weaponry forces the enemy units to spread out, to limit how much gets hit in a single blast. without it, they can stay bunched up, and support each other in firefights much more easily, with it, they spread out, making an assault that only clips the edge (hence clipping assault) more possible |

As others said, but the impact can range from irritating to hugely frustrating and annoying especially if the target has other formations intermingled. One of the more extreme cases occurred when some IG Rough Riders were clipped by a small Eldar formation, whilst their last stand was intermingled with an upgraded mechanised company. In the assault and resolution, all but one of the RR were killed off - not entirely unexpected - but losing the assault meant that the Mec Co also broke, which pretty much sealed the fate of the army. |

Ahh Ginger, that is a very usefull description of a succesfull clipping attack
