Post subject:  Terminators and transport. terminators + dreadnought upgrade

Hello All

I am wondering how one could have a formation of terminators with 1 or 2 dreadnoughts and still give them transport?

Note - Terminators and Dreadnoughts take up 2 transport spaces each in aircraft
Battle Barge Sixty Tactical, Assault, Devastator, Scout, Attack Bike, Bike, Terminator or Dreadnought units. Plus sixty Rhinos, Land Raiders, Razorbacks, Hunters, Whirlwinds, Predators or Vindicators plus nine
Thunderhawks and enough drop pods or landing craft to carry any other units on board.
Drop Pod Tactical, Devastator and Dreadnought units may enter play in Drop pods.
Landing Craft Twelve Tactical, Assault, Devastator, Scout, Attack Bike, Bike, Terminator or Dreadnought units. Plus four Land Raiders or six of the following Rhino, Razorback, Hunter, Whirlwind, Predator or Vindicator.
Land Raider One Terminator or Two Tactical, Devastator or Scout units.
Razorback One Tactical, Devastator or Scout units.
Rhino Two Tactical, Devastator or Scout units.
Strike Cruiser Twenty Tactical, Assault, Devastator, Scout, Attack Bike, Bike, Terminator or Dreadnought units, plus twenty Rhinos, Land Raiders, Razorbacks, Hunters, Whirlwinds, Predators or Vindicators, plus six Thunderhawks and enough drop pods or landing craft to carry other units on board.
Thunderhawk Eight Tactical, Assault, Devastator, Scout, Attack Bike, Bike, Terminator or Dreadnought units.

I am looking at the epic-uk generic Space Marine list and it seems the only way a terminator formation with a dreadnought upgrade can be transported is by landing craft!! This means unless you are playing with a landing craft it is very unlikely that one will ever see a terminator formation with dreadnought upgrades because of the very slow move (15cm).

The land raider upgrade does not work because you can add up to 4 land raiders - transporting your terminators and anyway, dreadnoughts cannot be transported in a land raider.

Unfortunately the Thunderhawk gunship will also not work since although the thunderhawk can carry 'Eight Tactical, Assault, Devastator, Scout, Attack Bike, Bike, Terminator or Dreadnought units' the comment above states 'Note - Terminators and Dreadnoughts take up 2 transport spaces each in aircraft' meaning a Thunderhawk is full with 4 terminators!!

Also, why can one not deploy terminators using drop pods?

Can anyone advise?

This is one of the reasons why no-one takes dreadnoughts.

lol

That's a shame though. I have a bunch of dreadnoughts in my army and it would be nice to field them.

I may be in a minority here, but really like using Termies + dreds in a LC. It provides a monster assault vehicle, and once the LC leaves the Dreds provide some cover for the Termies (being AV); they also increase the size of the formation for resolution purposes. My only real beef is their armour - but you cannot have everything
:)

Termies and Dreds can also be deployed as a 'Garrison' (actually more of an advanced assault group, from where their fire-power is also significant. (Dreds are also usefull with Devastators in the same role).

However, at 500 points (with Dreds and a leader) the enhanced Termie formation comes close to being the SC formation, so needs to be treated with a degree of caution; if you are going to assault with it, you need to follow up with other formations to ensure they get suitable support. This in turn starts to 'shape' the strategy you intend to adopt and the rest of the list that you are intending to use.

For example, a somewhat cheesy list (IMHO) might include Two warhounds, Termies + Dreds in LC, Space Cruiser (to deploy them), Termies in TH, Land Speeders, Tacticals and two TBolt formations for ~3000 points. The strategy being for the to Tacticals to hold the rear, the Warhounds and Land Speeders to hold the middle of the battlefield and provide support either way, and the enhanced Termies to planetfall into an assault position and assault with the others flying in to assault in support.

It's possible to fit 1 Dreadnought in with a Tactical formation in a Thunderhawk or 2 with a Devestator formation.

Dreadnoughts are added to drop pod deployed formations too.

Lastly some people like deploying a Devestator formation with Dreadnoughts but no transports garrisoned further forward on overwatch in a good position to shoot.

Dev's with two dreadnoughts can garrison and the marines can play tag with the dreadnoughts to claim cover by touching an AV :)

Thanks guys for the responses.

Looking at the transport addendum there is no ground transport which can transport a dreadnought. Is my reading of this correct?
