Has anyone ever put out or discussed a special characters supplement for E:A? A list of the heros and arch-villains (yarrik, gazkhull, abaddon, tu'shan etc) and their stats? It might be interesting to have a single model in your army be something more than "extra attack +1 MW" (without falling into the 28 mm 40k model of numerous exceptions to the rules in each list).

The old epic had special characters (njarl etc). While it may be good for home games, I definitely would not like to see them introduced in an official (or semi-official) version.

As it stands, with people introducing special rules for individual units (venerable?) you pretty much have this exist in some aspect without an actual 'character' being named.

I think an add-on rules patch / supplement-ette for various characters might be fun.

You'd never use it in tournaments, of course, but that doesn't stop it being fun!

Some Special Characters could have a unique "note" that grants a single new ability, for example:

Name : Chapter Master Marneus Calgar of the Ultramarines
Type: Character
Weapons :
Power Weapons - Extra Attacks (+1), Macro-Weapon, Assault Weapon
Honour Guard - Extra Attacks (+1), Macro-Weapon, Assault Weapon

Notes: Supreme Commander, Invulnerable Save, Formations that include Marneus Calgar recieve a +2 bonus when making initiative tests.

Points Cost : 175 Points, for Codex Space Marine armies only

Whilst other characters could be done without needing a unique note, for example:

Name : Chief Librarian Tigirius of the Ultramarines
Type: Character
Weapons :
Hood of Hellfire - Extra Attacks (+2), Macro-Weapon, Small Arms
Rod of Tigurius - Extra Attacks (+1), Macro-Weapon, Assault Weapon

Notes: Invulnerable Save, Leader

Points Cost : 75 Points, for Codex Space Marine armies only

No thanks. One of the things I like about epic is that it isn't about silly characters.

Sounds like a cool idea, as long as it is kept out of tournament games!

I might very occasionally invent and use house rules for Marneus Calgar or whoever in a friendly battle if I feel like it and my opponent is cool with it (it could add to the theme/flavour of the battle or campaign even), but I don't think there's any call for a supplement as such.

I always thought abaddon joinging 2000 pts of chaos marines in regular 40k was a bit ridiculous- he would be seen leading much larger forces.....epic sized forces.

I'm not talking about "tournament legal", but for fun.

Rather the communities resources went into doing basics first like the bloody Tyranids list for instance!

I say have at it; I doubt this is a matter that will somehow distract the "community" from basics like the tyranid list.

Perhaps a separate supplement isn't the way to go, but it certainly sounds like excellent fodder for a scenario book.

I'd say the game can't be hurt by such a thing if it was put together well. And if it were shabby it would be ignored anyway, so got for it!! I'd be interested.

In scenarios (not tournament games) I’d like to see special characters with rules similar to those of Eldar Farseers (farsight). In other words, things that affect strategy, not their combat statline.

Re-rolls, increased strategy ratings, retaining the initiative, negative bonuses to enemy strategy rolls, bonuses for certain actions, terrain bonuses, conferring fearless to an entire formation, orbital bombardments, planetfall (scatter) bonuses…

Having grown up with Obr. Greup and Lt. Greenwood, I kind of like the idea of special characters, but...

If you're going to add special characters, then add more sniper units as well.
