Post subject:  Where do Commissars go?

Is he mounted with the commander stand in an IG army, or is does he go on a completely different stand? Or does it matter? I mean, having him on a separate stand would of course improve his chances of surviving if the Commander is targeted...

Strictly by the rules you can put him in ANY unit in the army (even Aircrafts, Titans or Spaceships...) but only one per formation.

The first commisar has to be assigned to the Supreme Commander if you have one, all others can be put in any formation/base you like.

Ah, that's precisely what I was wondering. Thanks!

The NetEA version finally disallows the Navy or Titans from taking Commisars. To which I give a mighty "Hurrah!". Stupid [expetive redacted] rule that was.

Spacecraft are still technically allowed to field one, I can live with that.

@Guthwine: Not quite true. The first Commissar has to be put in the Supreme Commander's formation (= Regimental HQ in the Steel Legion army list). You don't have to put him on the Supreme Commander unit.

@BlackLegion: True, but attaching commisars directly to the (supreme) commander and making them fearless is the best choice, isnt it?

The main reason not to, is Leader on a single unit does not stack (See section 2.0), but two units in the same formation do. So putting the Commisar onto a 'grunt' allows two BM's to be removed when rallying.

If I'm not totally wrong it ends up that you can put them in Imperial Guard self-standing formations.
So not with Navy, as that isn't IG and not with Ogryns as they are not self-standing.

Upgrades are not formations. But I'd be perfectly fine with giving my commissars CC 4+, 2xMacro, Extra Attack (+2) and a 3+ Save with their Ogryn bodyguard. :D

Upgrades are added to formations, thus becoming part of the formation.

The only exception (and perhaps the source of Erik M's confusion), is that a Chaos character can only be attached to a core unit of the formation.

EDIT: I know it caused some consternation in our local group when I started suggesting Chaplain Dreadnoughts.

Well, that's one way to see it Dave. What's to back that up? But that's beside the point.
Chaplain dreadnoughts sound as a fun follow up there.
And no, I'm not the least confused. If an upgrade becomes a formation, then why wouldn't an ally become (full) part?

Anyhow, I'm quite happy with the "ruling"; Commissar/Ogryn and Chaplain/Dreadnought, here I come.
