Perhaps a silly question here folks, but I'm still strying to get the rules straight and am wondering about close assualts.
Troops in base to base use their close combat value- but can they then only destroy enemies in base to base? Or do hits continue "up the line"- ie up to 15cm away? It sort of seems obvious that close combat means toe to toe- but do hits really carry over to nearby targets?

If you are playing with the 2008 errata then CC hits can indeed move onto units within 15cms. If you are only using the rules in the book then they stay in CC (from memory, but I've not played with just the book for a long time!).

Units involved in an assault can 'hit' enemy units up to 15cm away. This zone defines the enemy units which can have hits allocated to them during the assault process. Normal units can use their CC factor if they are in B-B, and their FF factor if not in B-B (WE are slightly different). All the 'normal' hits that result are then pooled and allocated front-to-back within this assault zone irrespective of how the hits were caused. Once these are resolved, MW hits are allocated front-to-back, then TK hits.

The difference is that in the book, CCMW hits could only be allocated to B-B targets.

WE differ slightly in that they must specify the number of CC and FF dice, and allocate any hits accordingly.

Just to confirm, there is normally no distinction between FF and CC hits in assault.  The source of the hits is not tracked.  They are just pooled into generic "hits" and allocated front to back as normal.  Any unit that is within 15cm and line of sight of any enemy unit can be hit with assault hits.

There is an exception for War Engines, which must keep track of CC and FF hits separately and allocate accordingly.  That is sometimes kind of annoying to track but it was done because of some weirdness that results if you do not restrict the WEs.

It used to be that Macroweapon CC hits were restricted to CC, however that was removed in the errata for the sake of simplicity and MWCC hits are allocated just like other (non-WE) hits in assault but in a separate "round" of allocations, just like with ranged fire MW.
