I'd have to say the assault stalls too. Was pre measuring allowed? And if so how did the attacker get themselves into this situation?

Assault stalls.
Noone breaks because the Assault never even begins (noone left in range to actually fight).

Result is the same as if a formation Assaults and is left out of range and cannot begin a firefight (assault stalls and noone breaks, the activation is wasted).

Not to 'blow my own trumpet' but this silly situation wouldn't happen if you had to move towards the nearest 'engaged' enemy unit.

Would have to double-check the actual wording of the rules, but I suspect that the assault has not officially begun until the shooting starts.

Plus, it is simply unfair to be able to break your opponent just by moving back out of range... and Epic is not a 'rules lawyers' game, silly loopholes are meant to be worked out amicably between players, not exploited in a daft manner.

Look up the stipulation about no units being left within 15cm /formation breaking after assault?

Seemns epic is rules lawyer game so roll away and break the formations. Fits into spirit of epíc.

1.12.3 talks about getting at least one unit into 15cms of the target formation or the assault does not happen.

1.12.4 Counter Charge makes no mention of moving out of range.

The errata for 1.12.5 confuses it slightly by saying

'Directly engaged'
means being within 15cm of a
defending unit after charge and
counter-charge moves have been
completed

By mentioning counter charges in this section it could be read that the assault does not happen under that situation, but the relevant section (1.12.3) was not errated to say so.

Well that's the stalling (from errata documentation)

If all of the units in the defending formation have been killed
and at least one attacker survives, then the attacker wins and
the assault is over (go straight to 1.12.8). If all of the attacking
units directly engaged in the assault are killed then the assault
has stalled and the defender wins (go straight to 1.12.8).

1.12.8 is loser withdraws.
But that's only when they are killed. If they move out of range they weren't killed so no stalling.

There we go, noone was killed, noone breaks, and the activation was wasted.
