This came up in a game and we could not find a ruling:
A War Engine transporting a formation with some of the formation outside (actually a Nurgle PLague Tower transporting a formation with a War Altar). The formation comes under fire (both the WE and the troops outside take hits) and receives BMs. When the formation disembarks and the WE moves away, where do the BMs go?

We quickly ruled to split the BMs between both parts of the formation. However, should the WE and the formation being transported actually have received BMs separatly in the first place? What if the formation takes BMs but not the WE (or vice-versa) how does this effect activation?

Any comments are helpful, thanks.

If the WE is not part of the same formation as the troops, they can only embark if the entire formation can (and does) fit inside. The situation you describe is impossible I believe, as the War Alter can't enter the plague tower thus stopping the entire formation from doing so.

OK, I see that now - thanks

So, in this case the answer would have been - all BMs are on the WE (assuming there was no altar)?

Two seperate formations:

War Engine Transport
Infantry Formation

Infantry Formation rides inside War Engine Transport.

War Engine Transport gets shot at.

War Engine Transport takes Blast Markers...

...Blast Markers stay with the War Engine Transport. None go on the Infantry Formation, because it was entirely inside the Transport and thus was never actually shot at (and certainly never recieved any casualties).

As E&C says, the WE transport takes the hits and the BMs when shot at with the troops onboard (eg AA fire at an air transport making a ground assault).

If fired at after the troops disembark, normal rules apply so front-to-back relative to the firer. If this means that the next hit goes on the WE, then keep piling them on (up to the DC of the WE) before allocating any more hits to the troops.

Yep.  It's a weakness of WE transports that they can be broken with troops inside.

If loaded troops do take hits (like from a critical which results in mounted troops being hit), then the loaded formation would receive 1BM per kill as normal.
