Macro weapons can hit infantry and armoured vehicles.

But can a "MW4+" weapon be considered as a "AP4+/AT4+ MW" weapon ?
I mean : do the attacker need to choose INF or AV as a target, or the hits are allocated to the first targets (INF or AV) ?

From what I understand it is allocated after all other normal AP/AT hits are resolved, then MW are allocated for the closest models

I am sure others here will either concur or correct me...   ???

Hits are allocated to the first eligable target.

Note that if some targets in the formation are in cover (For example, infantry are all touching their Rhinos), you can choose whether to shoot into cover or not.

If you shoot into cover, you'd be enabled to hit the infantry & the Rhinos, with a -1 penalty to-hit (5+'s).

If you shoot into the open, you'd only be enabled to hit the Rhinos, with no penalty to hit (4+'s).

So there is a certain ammount of target choice you can do, if the enemy formation is partially in/out of cover.

MW attacks don't discriminate between INF or AV targets, they are allocated to the first valid target, regardless of type.

Two exceptions (and these apply to all attacks, not just MW):

1) Shooting attacks may be preferentially targetted/not targetted at War Engines in a formation that contains them.

2) Shooting attacks may choose to target units in cover/not in cover to avoid the -1 to hit penalty.

This second exception may allow for implicit targetting of AV units in mixed formations where infantry are based with vehicles to get the -1 to hit penalty.  By firing MW attacks at "units not in cover", they will ignore the infantry and only hit (non-cover using) vehicles.  Note that the reverse is *not* true, firing at "unit in cover" will hit both infantry and armoured vehicles, front-to-back, if there are enough hits.

So with 1 shot "MW4+", I can't shoot AV in a mixed formation with INF in front.

If the weapon had been "AP4+/AT4+ MW", it would have been possible to choose infantry or vehicles as targets. But MW profiles are not written like that.

Ok. Thanks for the answers.

Assuming that the infantry are separate from the AV, then a single MW hit will be allocated to the nearest unit (irrespective of whether that is infantry or vehicle). This is one of the reasons behind a current suggestion of changing all MW weapons to be MWAPx/MWATx, allowing the firer to choose the target being fired upon.

As others pointed out earlier, a formation often contains normal and MW weapons, so the normal weapon hits are allocated and resolved first to mitigate the effect of placing the MW hits on trivial targets.
